Hey yall. Looking to get an older 4wd to commute with. My neighbor has this 4wd 195k miles no rust. One owner its whole life. Unfortunately it is a 3.0 auto. He’s firm on 8k. What do y’all think? No rot other than the bumper. Even though it looks like it doesn’t get driven he said he drives it once a week

That would be very steep for me for what that is. Not bad but 3.0 with auto is not the combination I want.

If there is a history of the head gasket being replaced then not a bad deal in today’s market. I like the 3.0/auto combo in my ‘90 4Runner. HG done in 2000 by Toyota and I bought it in 2004.
Yes, of course they get poor MPG and lack power.

$8k is a lot without knowing the history of the motor. Especially the head gasket and 200k miles. It's over due for the head gasket issue if it hasn't been replaced yet.

Even if you do most of that work yourself, the parts cost are going to stack up because you're going to want to change everything on the front of the motor and up above. Don't loose those cam covers retainers on the back of the motor. Make sure to change both the knock sensor and wiring extension to the top of the motor if you're down that far. Head work, you'll be down that far.

The 3vze is not a bad motor, and lives up to it's reputation as 3 point slow. But if you do anything to it, it's just better to replace everything you can while your there because you're there and putting it all back together takes a lot time and effort.

If you need v6 and want that look then getting a 3.4 and doing the swap would be my path, however I would still want the manual transmission. My 22r is slow but I get 22mpg with it. My 3.4 4wd manual got 18-20 fairly regularly with road trips hitting 24mpg.
