On Sept. 19th - 22nd I am taking a group of between 6-8 guys and 3 vehicles on a surf trip to the Erendira area of Baja. I have room for 1-2 more vehicles if anyone is interested in going.

The focus of this trip is to surf so I would not consider it a wheeling trip. The plan is to head down the morning of the 19th through San Ysidro and go straight to Erindira where we will stay at Coyote Cal's Coyote Cal's Mexico Hostels in time to get a session or two in that day. During the days we are there we will surf where the swell leads us and on the 22nd we will come back through Tecate.

I got a wedding that weekend, otherwise, i would be there.

Few suggestions:

-Cross in AND out of Tecate, its worth the extra 30-45mins, stay clear or TJ/Rosarito
-Do NOT leave your rigs unattended when inside Cals
-Abort leaving the rigs unattended at Cals and camp out @ Punta Cabres (about 5 miles south)
-Have Fun
-Be Safe

-On crossing in AND out of Tecate I have been debating this for a while. I think that there are dangers on both routes. There are the obvious dangers on the toll road but I think that by traveling during the day (not 4a.m.), always keeping the group together, and not stopping until Ensenada the danger is mitigated. The bad part about the Tecate road is that it is a two lane and I have always thought that if the banditos were really targeting Americans there is much more opportunity on isolated stretches of this road. Last year coming back from one trip there was a drunk local who scared the $$hit out of me. All the way from Ensenada to Tecate he would pass you and long lines of cars with no regard for oncoming traffic and forced a few people into the ditch. The bad part was that just when you thought you had rid yourself of him you would see him on the side of the road relieving himself and the whole damn scare would repeat itself. I have seen and had way more close calls on the two lanes down there than the toll road.

I absolutely hear you about the reason to avoid the toll road and have been watching events down there daily and talking to a few people who travel on the road regularly.

- I am camping outside at Cal's with my rig as close as possible. He has a nice little camping area and I do not plan to spend much time at his bar since you cannot take your own beer inside.:D

- Wherever I go to surf my rig goes and that applies to all drivers. :steer:

- How can you not have fun if you are surfing.:grinpimp:

- Safety is my #1 priority.

I wont get into a big argument here, but drunk locals are one thing, real banditos are another. Not saying that its 100% safe, but how many reports have you heard about them on the road from Tecate to Ensenada? Not a single one correct? :flipoff2:

Cool! Leaving rigs unattended ANYWHERE in Mexico is a no no in my book!

Good Man!

Easily, you come out of the surf and have no ride home cause your trucks gone! :D

Cool! Have a good time and be safe!

My son is down in Mex this weekend at my buddies house in Primo Tapia. They had no problems driving down yesterday and the waves were 2-3' with nobody out and the water was around 65'. :D

Great pics Scott! It would be great to have you along.

That shot of the bay at Santo Tomas brings back a lot of memories of my first trip down there 18 years ago.

Dan-

That's a big group, nobody will want to mess with you. :D

If somebody drops out maybe I can jump in when it gets a little closer. :)

Scott

I'll keep you updated.

Yeah it is alot of guys but we try and be respectful when we show up at a break to the guys already there. Times have changed in the last few years with the safety concerns I now always travel with a couple more vehicles.

My dad had been doing research down in Baja for years, specifically San Quintin (sp?) anyhow....About 5 years ago he stopped going down completely. San Quintin is a lot further down than Erindira and they has the same probs Boston Mangler speaks of. They camped in a very remote area, would leave for a while to the beach for a walk and come back to a vandalized rig, they took clothes cameras and other $$ items. Dont want to be a negative ninny here Dan just want to chime in and encourage you to be extra cautious, ensuring you have a great time with no drama. Wish I could go I love that area but have not been down since i was in my early 20s.

I am going in the first week of sept.....for a week. I posted in expedition portal....Wish the dates would coincide...but no...I do want to hi Mike's Sky Ranch and the observatory before getting to the beach....
