Glowing red hot will certainly work.
If you feel any discomfort with applying that much heat you can apply milder heat as a complement to the bfh or the kama sutra. It will just take more time/effort.

pry down on the lower control arm THEN beat the hell outta the ball joint stud.

As said above the taper needs to be broken. You could probably rent a taper breaker which looks similar to a puller or you can use 2 hammers to break it. Put one hammer behind the stud and bash the hell out of the face of the spot it sits in.
