bad dimmer switch!

87 4runner, I have NO dash lights, I believe my dimmer switch is messed up, since the PO did some "electrical work" with the wires for that. is there a way to bypass that switch, or no? I'd check but it out, but I'm stuck at school for a few hours...

Disconnect the rheostat and just connect the wires together - that should give you full power to the dash lights.
