Awnings, let's see them

I've been getting ready to pull the trigger on a freestanding awning. I've narrowed it down to the OVS 270 or the Overland Pros Wraptor 4k.

Here's a video of the Wraptor on an LC.

A quick youtube search will yield tons of videos for the OVS. Here's one I like. This guy reminds of the host of Blue's Clues for some reason.

My quick opinions on awnings is the 270's will touch your hatch. So be prepared for that, even putting a hat between the arm and the hatch is enough to protect it, so long as it doesn't blow off. Also the larger ones with the added hinge and arms in front (OVS Nomadic, 23 Zero Perigrine, Ironman Deltawing XL, etc.) are not as good as the smaller ones with just the rear hinge. Again, my opinion... they weigh more, take longer to put away, are difficult to get back into the bag, and the party is always in back by the fridge, never up by the front fender. your experience may vary.

I've spent a bit of time doing videos on these though for anyone interested, including the OVS, Deltawings, and Foxwing/Batwings mentioned here recently. Here are the pages...

hit me up with any questions/comments, thanks. happy awninging...

I've had both a normal 270 and the OVS 270 with the hinge at the front and the back. IMO and experience, the OVS 270 is much easier to setup and put away than a normal 270. The front hinge is just an extra step. I like the additional coverage in the front but do agree that the back coverage is more useful. My OVS fits in the bag easily and I gladly deploy it everywhere.

In addition, what's more important are freestanding arms that do not require legs. The cheaper 270s require the arms to be deployed with legs as supports. These are absolutely awful, difficult to setup, difficult to put away, and guaranteed to break. My normal 270 broke in high winds and I eventually gave it away for free.

Normal 270 with additional support legs.

I’ve had way too many awnings over the years and have sold and mounted tons of brands also. Regular straight out classic ARB style, Batwing 270 with poles, 360 legless awning, 90 with no poles, 270 freestanding. They all have strengths and weaknesses. One rule is if the awning is a pain to open or close you will use it less. The rack and mounting bracket is crucial in how solid or weak your freestanding awning is. I’ve never had an issue clearing the 80 hatch on any of my 270s.
