It is expensive, but less than an aux fuel tank. And for me, $400 for some peace of mind doesn’t sound too bad.

u stack enough of them together to be thicker than the spare tire. You could just carry 1 (6 gallons) and it would tuck up much higher than the spare tire.

That's only possible if you've moved the spare tire to a different location. I do not have an aftermarket bumper nor do I want to add one, I wanted to mount one on top of the spare tire while still keeping the spare in the factory location. Right now the spare hangs is already the lowest point on the undercarriage, dropping it another 3 inches would decrease my ground clearance way too much.

For the price I don't mind having to drop and fill as it would only be used in emergencies, like you said $300-$450 for piece of mind is a bargain. If I was planning on using it regularly then a cheap external fuel pump and some hose would make it easy to transfer fuel into the main tank.

It'd be nice if they offered different colors so you can use one for water and one for fuel without mixing them up.

BTW this is getting pretty far off topic, but to keep in on topic if you had enough spare gas then you wouldn't need all those extra batteries :)

I am moving the spare to a rear swing arm. Is there anything wrong with fabricating a steel carrier plate to hold the batteries in that void? I was thinking of 1/4 inch steel.

IMO, no reason why it wouldn't work, but 1/4 sounds overkill considering not even the frame of the GX is anywhere close to being that thick. Even most skids are only 3/16 or less, so unless you're planning on hardcore rock crawling just seems like a lot of unnecessary weight

Yeah, but as mentioned above, we on the west coast are not allowed to add an aux tank, only if it's a factory spec.
But I was thinking that one could plumb the 2 (or 3, whatever fits) containers with some PVC and have a hose for gravity feed and a hose to fill.
Hummmm... wonder if something like that would work?

Agreed, 1/4" plate may be a little over kill. Considering the worst that can happen would be the battery being punctured, that would mean acid spilling (DON'T TELL EPA!!!) and would basically kill your battery, but you'd still have your starter battery.
My thoughts would be .125" aluminum plate (or steel) and just ensure it covers the entire side of the battery facing down and also a plate on the top side to prevent anything puncturing or crushing the top side if it should get pushed upward. Laying the contacts on the side would allow easy access to the terminals. You could even mount a fuse block/bus up there and it should be high and and very out of the way!
This is kind of what I'm thinking.
