I'm considering the purchase of a 1971 FJ55 which has been outfitted with a small block chevy 327 motor and a turbo 400 transmission. My mechanic tells me that the two are not compatible and that the vehicle cannot be running properly. The seller tells me that the transmission needs a new main seal and the pan gasket replaced, and that with that taken care of the vehicle runs fine. I'm 700 miles away and can't see for myself whether this is true or not. I'd appreciate to hear from anyone with knowledge or advice on what I should ask or look for before buying. Thanks in advance.

THe 327 and T400 together do not matter, GM coupled the 400 to a bunch of 350 engines in lt trucks.
Advise, find a good cruiserhead local to the truck and pay him somthing to take a look at this rig for you.

I have a 350 and turbo 400 in my 45, Advance Adapter in between

csb and 400 in my 40. No problems. 327 is a 4.0 bore like a 350 with a stroke of a 307. You cannot tell them apart from the outside without looking at the casting numbers, and even then many of the castings were the same. Many thousands of TH400s were mated to small blocks.

the TH400 does not have a "main" seal. It has an input shaft seal, an output shaft seal, a bunch of other internal and external o-rings and seals. I suspect he means the input shaft seal.

SBC to TH400

Ive got a 350 Chevy in my FJ55 mated to a TH350 and have no problems. Tranny mated to stock Toy T-case. Only problem, if you want to call it that, is the shifters are about 2.5" farther back on the tunnel. Cut and bent 2 patches to match and welded them in. After the Rhino line, you cant even tell. Hope that helps. Hodag
