I have 1992 toyota 4x4 4runner, its has the 3.0v6 and auto tranny. Lately while driving it at highway speeds when I let off of the gas its has been making a slight vibration and a pretty decent roaring noise, but the tranny has been shifting just like normal, no slippage at all. I tightend the pinion nut on the t case side, and it seemed to help a little. Any ideas as to what this could be? It only happens at highway speeds and only right after I let off of the gas. Someone said that it could be a stretched tcase chain, but then someone else said that I would pretty much have to pull the tranny and the tcase to see what was up since they are almost a 1 piece unit. Any help it appreciated.

Yes its lifted, trail gear sas, marlin 4inch springs, ome heavy duty 80's series coils, exteneded links, on 35's, I just replaced both the 3rds, and they are tight, I'll cehck the joints. In the manual i have it mentions having to remove the enitire transmission to remove the tcase, is this true?, or is there a way around this.

Sounds like a drive shaft vibration to me. My first test is to grease the joints and see if the vibration changes, is reduced, if so it's the shaft. Often the lift changes the shaft geometry enough to cause the vibration.

A good page on the subject;

Clarify please...

2 piece rear driveshaft or the original one piece?

Guys who use the one piece w/ any lift's get a pull on the output shaft, and the pinion, causing premature bearing and seal failures because they've neglected to install a spacer to lengthen the shaft, or go to a slip style to work with the newer movement lengths.

Now, under coast only? *Could be bad ring/pinion set-up causing noise on coast, or simply since you mention it's ben SAS'd, it could be simple need to break-in the gears.

Take a look at those things, then first chance you get chuck the chain driven transfer case for a geared option.

Call Jim at Inchworm Rock Walkin' Gear - for an adapter to do so.

yes the trans and t case are a bastard siamese twin that can only be removed as a whole tumor, and should be discarded like the bile it is, and replaced with a high quality G54
