People with chevrolet engines....make SURE you have a locking type nut on your air cleaner, like a nylock or stamped nut. If not, your air cleaner stud can break off at the throttle body, then apparently dangle there until the nut lets go of the broken stud, at which time it will get sucked into the intake. Then it might make it into your number 5 cylinder and punch a hole through the engine block's water jacket and cause catasrophic damage to your engine and cylinder head.......go ahead, ask me how I know all this.......

There goes my year.....anyone got an extra seat?

Official damage report.......

The Good: my $400 Edelbrock TBI to Vortec intake survived untouched.
The Bad: my NEW cylinder head looks pretty battered, but salvageable.....maybe...
The Ugly: my rebuilt block with only 35,000 miles on it has a 4 inch crack in the #5 cylinder.:crybaby: The piston looks absolutely horrible, BUT....I wanted to replace the block at some point anyway, because I wanted the newer 96' and up block with a balance shaft, since the 4.3 is known as a shaker. Mine definitely had some harsh vibes in the 3500 RPM range. You have to take the good with the bad I guess.
Going to be a while before I can afford the new block, but at least I already have an engine hoist and the knowledge to do my own work.

Lol about the ARB....I think every ARB air locker I've ever seen only works when it wants to. I'll stick with mechanical lockers......I've never seen a lockright give up on the trail.

Funny thing is, my wife, daughter and I went on a 400 mile trip this weekend with the truck. Went though Breckenridge up highway 9, to Vail and I-70 down through Aspen, got caught in three snow storms, saw two wrecks and as we were coming home through Buena vista, I started to lose power pretty bad, but made it all the way back to woodland park and the truck quit about a 1000 yards from the house. My thought is that chunk of bolt was stuck holding the #5 intake valve open for a long time, somewhere about holy cross was when I noticed it. Engine started wanting to die when I would throttle to get up the hills, but the engine would pick back up when the tranny shifted to second. Thought it was the elevation messing with the MAP sensor:bang:

Good thing you have the Red Rust Rocket! I have to be at work this week but then I am off for two weeks so let me know if when you want me bring some beer.

We hauled Mike's 75 parts Bronco upto my place yesterday and started putting it together. It will be a trail beater when we get it running.

I wouldn't put a 2F in a riding lawn mower mark, lol.

The engine is already torn down and the cylinder head is in the shop getting looked at.....my engine guy thinks the head maybe OK, but he is going to magnaflux it for cracks. Remember i was having trouble at the christmas tree cutting and had both heads redone in January, at a cost of $300. That hurts me. There is definately no money for a new engine in my budget this year, so it's going to sit for a long time.

Chuck, I have welded the rear diff in the "red rust rocket" so I can show you how it's done stock style, hahahaha.

Bummer Luke! I'll be glad to help whenever you need it.

I'll be in the springs pulling an engine tomorrow at U pull and Pay on 85-87. found a 2001 blazer with a good engine and low miles. thinking about running it "as is" after a compression check. problem is I will have to cut most of the drivers side off the truck as it was severely hit in the front driver fender. I have a sawzall with 4 batteries. I'm gonna cut everything out of the way:p. anyway, anyone got some free time to help? should be there about 9:30AM or so. let me know.

Woo hoo for me!! I have acquired a new engine! Snagged a 2001 4.3 vortec, complete with heads and all. Got a very good deal, and hopefully the block is ok to run as is. Should be up and running sooner than I thought. Major thanks goes to Leon(CO_Hunter), who showed up for the day to help, and seems to be some sort of an expert with a sawzall and overly large prybars. Lol

Hey I was glad to help and it was fun too. Hopefully we'll see the 4runner out there soon, don't forget the nylock!!! :D By the way I got my trailer lighting fixed so it was a good weekend for all.... Now if I could just figure out how to get that last pull to straighten my bumper???

IT LIVES!!!!! The big black 4runner is up and running again. new motor is installed, ended up re-ringing the pistons, grinding the valves with valve lapping compound and putting in all new gaskets. the only thing original to the motor is the bearings. figure I will destroy something else before the bearings give it up. I must have rubbed off on the wife, she chipped in lots of money to get me on the road again. either she was tired of my bottom lip dragging on the floor--or she missed the trail rides too......

Fired the engine up about noon today, the smoke from the tailpipe was really bad.....like, thought the neighbors were going to complain bad. lol. the exhaust was still full of antifreeze from the block cracking. once that was all burned off everything was all good--even had the timing almost perfect!!

MAJOR thanks goes to chuck and mike who came to the rescue saturday night and worked their butts off. I didn't know three guys could put a chevy engine together that fast......you guys rock!!!!!

Sweet, I hope to see it tomorrow. But one big question... Got Nylock? :D

I put some bolts in the exhaust manifolds and helped put the dip stick tub in. Then I took a break for a couple of hours drank a couple beers and shot the bull with Luke. I guess Mike was still working during that time?

We have been working on Blue Boar. This what we decided to call the 75 Bronco Mike put together from parts. It's not quite done but then trail rigs never are. We plan on bringing it and Pretty Penny on the trail today.
