I'm in the process of flushing my power steering fluid and I noticed the cap says to use automatic transmission fluid. The fluid in the reservoir looks like standard Power steering fluid. There is no red tint of any kind. So now I'm confused. Is the cap wrong or is the current old fluid wrong?

Edit: Just checked my Haynes manual and it calls for Dexron II ATF. So I guess I need to put the power steering fluid away and go pick up some Dexron II ATF. I hope that's right.

ATF is what Mr. T wanted you to use. A light hydraulic oil can also be used but the system must have all the other stuff flushed out. I believe many people, including me, use a high quality full synthetic ATF. Mainly because it only takes a few quarts so the cost isn't too prohibitive.

Yup, DexII/III is what you want to put in there.

My BMW uses ATF for power steering as well. I use Royal Purple Synthetic ATF in my M3 and it got rid of a groan at full lock that I used to have.

ATF. I use synthetic. PO put in steering fluid, I bled it and put in what Mr T called for.

I cant find a fluid capacity for power steering.

how many quarts do I need to buy so I can complete a flush and fill?

1.5 if not 1 will be plenty.

I run ATF in mine also since it is one less fluid I have to carry.
