I've searched through previous posts on this subject and am going to drain/fill my ATF with Mobil 1.

I know it wont get a completely new fluid exchange, but how many times should I drain/fill to get the fluid as new as possible?

How far apart should I space the drain/fill (weekly?)?

I have a 1997 LX450 97K miles. I don't believe the fluid has ever been changed.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Three times, I'd say. Drop the tranny pan on the third time and clean the filter. I got about 4qts per simple drain/refill and approx. 7qts with the pan/filter off for almost a day.

For a speedy process, a week apart would be fine.

First of all, how many miles do you have on your 450?

This is what I did on my 450 when it has 35,000 miles

- drop the tranny pan, clean and wipe the pan with lint free rags
- removed the filter, washed it with brake parts cleaner, then installed it back and torqued the bolts to specs.
- install the tranny pan with Toy FIPG and torqued bolts to specs.
- open the hood, removed the top oil cooler line, installed a clear tubing on the return line and placed a bucket to catch the old fluid from the tranny.
- fill the tranny with 5 quarts of fluid, start the engine, watch for the old fluid to come out of the return line, shutt the engine off, measure how much fluid came out, then fill the tranny back with the same amount, repeat the procedures until the tranny fluid is clear, red and smells new.
- then remove the clear tube, replace the hose back to tranny and you're done.
- let vehicle sit about an hour and measure the fluid through the dipstick.

That is exactly how we do it at the shop.

I guess it really comes down to money, the more you run through the more fluid you use. I would do the above cycle at least twice maybe figure 10 qts of ATF per cycle then 3-5 to top off and for waste.

I would strongly suggest redline ATF. I think itis much better then Mobil 1.

Another thought, call some oil dists andtry to buy a 16 gallon drum of the Mobil 1. This will get you 3-4 trucks. it is a great club idea.

This is exactly what I did as well, except I went and bought two cases of Valvoline Max life Dexron III / Mercon. I used about 18 quarts, after the dropping the transmission pan & cleaning the filter, I would drain 5 quarts, then fill 5. This process is much easer with two people.
