^ You might consider using Yakima's towers as your 'feet', they are very sturdy, and easy to come by. Plus, lockable!

I'm very impressed with the design of both Thule and Yak, but can't easily adapt it to beams running lengthwise. Also, I'm hoping to have only aluminum and stainless when I'm done. I'd like something I can lock, possibly using the locking knobs off my Thule or some locking lug bolts. Hiding the bolts on the back side of the feet makes them difficult to access but more secure. Security bolts would deter the opportunist thief. I can't get too exotic with six or eight feet to build, maybe just two could be locking.

Tobascofish had his mid length rack shipped to me, as a business delivery to save a few bucks, and the shipping weight was 104 lbs. It took 4 of us to get it on the roof safely without damaging the truck.
