Anything bad to say about the 3rd gen 4runners?

Flying low, my rig has spent all of its life in Utah, and it shows hardly any rust. If you're worried, you can buy those Rustoleum rust-proofing paint from Home Depot and spray wherever you see rust. It's supposed to stop rust from spreading. A few of the 4Runner guys have done this.

The truck has no rust, but the where I live I need to stop it from starting. I would like to undercoat it. Utah is beautiful place for Toyotas!

I sure like my 96..... wish the engine had more hp at times but perhaps the 32's were a bit much.. the 2.7 litre I find out has a timing chain so no belt replacement costs..a lil cheaper on the fuel than the 6 if you take what it gives you on the hills... At worse I get 21 around town for mileage and high 20's on the highway....oh and that little "rear diff lock" button on the dash is a beauty man! The newer ones don't have that anymore!
Ya they're sort of rough like a truck but not like a solid front axle truck.
The girlfriend, 2 kids a dog and the gear and I never worry about the weather....a/c for the hot days and 4wd with the rear locker with ample ground clearance for the poor days. :)

I've got a 97, great vehicle. Read the forums and you'll find the same issues mentioned here, front brakes, rear axle seals, cupholder (97-98).

Front brakes: Don't replace with factory rotors!! Either get Brembo rotors and factory pads, or if you tow or drive mountains, upgrade to the thicker Tundra rotors and 199mm calipers which fit with minor splashguard trimming. Lots of threads on this at Yotatech.

Steering Rack bushings: replace with polyurethane, readily available (Wheelers, 4WP, etc). Common issue - at 100k the stockers are guaranteed to be worn out.

Front wheel wobble/balance: These Toyota rims are lug-centric, and require an adaptor to balance properly. If you're getting them balanced and they still wobble, either your shop is not doing it correctly or you've possibly got a bad tire, or maybe another issue. Again, tons of thread on Yotatech.

An oil change requires removing both skidplates and 9 bolts or so - poor design.

First time I've read this. While it isn't the easiest access, it IS possible to change oil without removing the front skid. Why remove the rear skid? It doesn't interfere with the pan or filter at all.

Thanks for this info, I have been thinking of upgrading our front brake rotors. They are warped because the last person to do a rear brake job left out the spring on the adjuster. Rears were doing nothing and the ebrake didn't work. I will look at the bushings on the rack too. I hate to join another forum, mud eats up enough time, but I will have to check out yotatech too.

Yotatech has a TON of great info, including lots of articles for DIY jobs. Highly recommend checking it out.

Rather than send a member to another forum- I'd like to see us promote this one and build it up to become the resource everyone else points towards. I know you were just trying to be helpful, and I'm certain there is great information available elsewhere, I just think we have an opportunity to really shine here.

Could be possible, but we have probably 1/100th of members on here that has a 4Runner compared to yotatech. I really don't think it's a bad thing that we're referring people to yotatech. They are not in direct competition with us.

ih8mud is a GREAT source of info for all Land Cruisers. I have referred people to this site on numerous sites (yotatech, ttora, t4r.org, etc.). Even if someone were to try, no one will be able to catch up to the great wealth of info that can be found on here (along with many many helpful members). The same can be said of yotatech. We're all here to help each other, first and foremost. Sometimes we have to direct them to a place where they will find the most help.

99-00 Limiteds came with AWD and AWD became standard on all trims from 2001+.

What is your budget?

The 01-2's are not AWD. My 01 drive around in 2wd. You hit the 4wd button for awd or 4hi. Then theres 4wd low.

For the guy looking to research or by one:
99-00 are the most sought after because they have some interior and exterior updates, but still have the rear push button locker.

01-02 Have the center diff lock and a-trac, the computerized system that puts brakes to the slipping wheel. Good for getting a wheel off the ground and being able to keep going. Does not work as well as a locker for sustained difficult offroading.

not trying to direct anyone away, but search yotatech or 4x4wire for great technical info or let me know if you have questions here. :)

That is what I meant. I figured that everyone knew all 4Runners are 2WD with selectable 4WD configuration. BUT, to clarify, you do have to hit the 4WD button (or lever in some cases) to put the rig into 4WD/AWD Hi/Lo.

BTW, I have a 2002 SE.
