Cool ride. I don't get get the single speed thing. Maybe for a round-town bike but for climbing I've GOT to have the granny gears. OTOH some years ago I was in Leadville CO playing road crew for a friend who was riding in the Leadville 100 (a 100 mile MTB race that has about 10,000 total feet of climbing, starting altitude 10,300 ft.) Anyhow some dude comes rolling up to the finish line on a single speed ride - he took 7th place out of a field of several hundred riders. The crowd at the finish line went nuts. I was suitably impressed as I picked my jaw up off the ground.

I ride quite a bit of XC, more as a form of cardio than actually ever intending to compete. It's fun... not even like working out. I try to ride every Saturday and Sunday morning. We've had several threads about this in the last couple of months. Plenty of MTB'rs around here.

yeh i went single speed because i smashed my second derailur hanger for the year yesterday and im not spending any more money for a while, so this is a quick fix. the bike only gets used for DH and jumps so im not hill climbing much. the only letdown still is my forks which suck.

I used to do some trials riding back in the day, and some XC racing. Now it's just for fun. Hurts too much when I fall!

:D yeh i do down hill and jumps, i told myself a month or so back that i would stop and go to cross country stuff cos it was less painful but im back on the jumps and DH trials.

Mine looks just like that except its got no suspension and has fenders, steel baskets and lots of lights...oh and its not Orange its yellow. Rode it to work this morning:flipoff2:

I've been mountain biking for about 10 years now. I'm still hammering in the woods with a buddy even though we're both 44 years old.
I ride an aluminum XC Gary Fisher hard tail as my primary bike. I live in New England, but the weather has been mild enough to continue riding.
I have been taking spinning classes so as to be in shape for the spring, but I gotta tell you guys, it's really improved my acceleration and stamina for the hills. I have been CRUSHING my riding buddy on the hills. Before spinning, he had the weight advantage for hill climbing. Now, I've got the lung advantage.:D
