Bumping an old thread - but I went to use my Gen2 9.5RS this weekend for the very first time and found it non operational and the synthetic line nearest the lefthand side of the winch totally melted. I know it was operational before since I've tightened the fairlead, but it's never been under a load. Time to do some investigating to see if it was just wired wrong or what happened. Pretty bummed given the price of the winch (whether it was installation error or other..)
Please report back your theories. I've had mine on my truck for years and only used a few times. I keep a cover on it, but it's as good as new. Curious what could have gone wrong with yours.

No I mean it was operational in that I've turned it on to tighten the fairlead, but haven't ever put it under load.
That is the first thing you should have done is unspool the winch line and re spooled while under load . . Are you using a remote ? Or a plug in. If remote check the battery

I tried the remote and the battery did seem fine. The power button on the control box itself should light up after holding it for a few seconds, right? That is what I remembered before but it was not illuminating.

Have you contacted Comeup about this? The rope would only melt if the winch got hot enough to do so. If you haven't reached out to Comeup yet, please do so, and ask for Rod. He'll help figure out what caused this.
