I am chasing steering problems and would like to try a lower mileage ps box on the truck. my current one may have 460K on it, plus the ram, and i can't figure out why the steering is so sluggish at low rpm and low speeds, but also why there is such a horrid shimmy at speeds over 50 kph.

anything with reasonably low mileage that doesn't need a rebuild should work, i think.

Steven, try looking up hzj60 guy or RADD cruisers and ram assist on MUD and you'll get the build thread originally posted by that said, i am having some problems with steering, so can't attest that this set up is perfect.

Wandering might be caster issue.

Ram does slows things up a fair bit, moving a bunch more fluid, so even if you hotrod the pump shim it for more pressure and open up the hole for more fluid flow, it will have some low speed issues.

Not sure if higher end rams have the same issues like the once from psc.

Chris, there's probably restrictions from the box to fittings used, wrong fitting size, wrong diameter lines trying to push proper volume of fluid and even the pump pushing the fluid might be lazy. I'd start from scratch and work your way upstream. Shimmy could be worn rod ends, worn stabilizer(common on Dodges and Fords) or even a worn out sector shaft in the box, like you were thinking.
Cheers!

Hmmmmm. Is it possible to measure the caster accurately without taking the knuckles appart?
I'm trying to picture it in my head.

Chris, is the box sloppy?

I'm guessing there is more than One problem here.
Perhaps a smaller pulley on the ps pump+ some hot rodding.

Can't any shop with a decent alignment machine measure caster for you? ...

Sure... Im thinking "at home" aka the cheap way....

I used a angle finder on the trunion bearing races when doing my cut and turn. Works great when the front end is all apart but not so well when its complete.

there's high steer on there isn't there? they're big flat lumps that you could stick an angle finder on fairly easy, and that flat surface does reflect the caster pretty accurately.

don't have to be all that sophisticated for this, just a straight edge on the flat leading leading out forward , and see if it points up or down.

down=bad... if it's level, then step up the attention to accuracy.

big gay alberta shackles will mess things up too.
has it ever returned to centre after corners? If not it's usually sign of bad castor, but hydro assist might change that.

Chris, have you considered removing the ram assist? Or do you feel you need it/want it?

Is there an easy way to remove it and not shoot power steering fluid everywhere... perhaps that could help you narrow down if its the component of the truck causing your issues?

Also nothing to do with the slow speed stuff... but I had a horrible shimmy when I had my wheels not lined up properly do to a screw head in the drums... are you sure that your rims are seating correctly?

Do you have a considerable amount of play in the box?

Nothing productive to add, just had a good laugh at this lol, although I think they are Ontario shackles now no? :hillbilly:

just wondering if this was a problem before you took the birfs out of the front axle..
did you remove the steering arms as well??
did you preload the trunion bearings when you put it all back together?

might be your trunion bearings if it wasnt a problem before the birf swap..

Thanks all,

I did a big follow up write up but I don't see it above, so must have hit the wrong button again.

I did have problems before replacing the birfs last month. no, i couldn't measure preload. i couldn't tighten everything up till I had the birfs in, and don't think one can measure it after they are in.

tie rod ends are new, relay rod ends are not.
wheels are borrow bfg ats on 15 inch alu, balanced, good tread.
caster and alignment were measured and within spec on gamaman's machine.

will try to make time this week to do some more tests on front end, and may remove ram, cap the fittings, do a fluid flush and see how things go. cheap things first.

off to Edmonton in this beast next monday, so not going to remove too much metal till after that trip!

thanks.

so, some good news and some not. thanks to all for suggestions.

i removed the ram and capped the ports and cleaned up one the pressure line, which was four feet long to go 10 inches! the steering now returns very quickly to center after making a turn. steering takes a bit more input in general, but is smooth.

while the front was jacked up i checked wheel bearing wobble. what at first looked like front left wheel bearing wear is now appearing to be trunnion bearing wear, so it looks like i'll have the knuckle apart over the next two days.

so, if all goes well, I'll make it to edmonton at an average speed of 50 kph, but with no death wobble!
