I need to pull my head and want to take it to a performance shop to be ported/machined/rebuilt but I'm not familiar with these engines (although I used to pull eng and trans all the time in our race cars). would just like to get info and possibly help from someone with experience.

I know I can take it to sdtrux or any other lc shop but I'd rather save the cash and learn how to do the work myself...better in the long run.

thanks for any info.

it appears as though my valve guides are leaking (white smoke on start up) so I'll need to get this going in the near future probably.

There is a dude on the forums that makes a DVD for doing the HG and everyone seems to love it.

I did mine last spring. It really wasn't that intimidating once I dove it. Do you have the FSM? I have Doug's HG video, it was a good watch but if you're fairly mechanically inclined you wont need it. I think the best pointer in it was that you'll need three 10" extensions and a swivel to get to the rear intake bolts when splitting the plenum.

Depending on when your looking to do it I may be able to help. PM me and I'll see what I can do.

Oh, and I took my head to Rancho Performance in Temecula. Really nice guys, great work. I dropped the head off on a Monday to be shaved, cleaned, tested, and a complete valve job, picked it up that Thursday.

Ok, Im about four good hour from having a 40 front axle done and in place on my 40 then I will have shop room, Warfield needs his done and I have some upcoming weekends open. Im in the Beaumont/Banning area. Need to find the video and make sure everyone has the parts to do it.
I'd suggest getting a hold of Cdan or some OEM supplier and get parts lined up.

When are you guys planning on doing the HG? I just picked up a 93 with 125k and wouldn't mind doing the HG as PM before I head to South America.

If I get some time it will be the next two weeks, I have no racing events after this weekend till King of The Hammers so we need to get Warefields done, I can do three side by side, last one in gets the spot with poor lighting, Like I said, get your parts rolling if you wanna do it. I will provide, various tools as needed, clear work space, air and any hydro lift stuff needed. Id love to see someone get the DVD for the process.

I'd love to get mine done with the group but it's a bit far (not really that big of a problem) and I want to have superior automotive in anahiem rebuild my head (port/polish, valve job, etc) and that takes at least a day or two, so my lc would just be sitting there until they are done. ugh, decisions, decisions.

I might just have to take it to my friends in fallbrook and do the work over there and hopefully chap79 can swing by for some help and guidance for both the removal and the reinstall.

I got all my parts ordered from Cdan today. Let me know when this is going down and I'm there.

Ok, I have three days next week, Fri, Sat, Sun, late Sat and Sunday the following weekend and Fri, Sat Sun the week after that.
Anyone have a DVD copy?

so it appears as though a good amount of heads, after being pulled and rebuilt during the hg replacment, end up cracking later on which leads to cost/time of R & R of head and cost of new head.

this seems like a good option for only $80...cryo treating the head while it's off to increase it's strength.
