Anyone do any Metal detecting?

If so, what models do you recommend for the beginner.

That is why I bought my FJ60 !!! After I broke my wife's Pontiac Aztek out wheeling in the gold fields. She said it was time for a "real 4x4" so I bought "Leaky" and fixed her up to go out gold nugget hunting in comfort.

Here I am in Nevada with a chest mounted Garrett Infinium PI Pulse machine

There are lots of questions to ask before getting a machine. Are you going to be looking for gold? Or coins-n-stuff at the park? I would try to find a local dealer that gives lessons w/ a purchase as many of the machines are very limted with their stock "out of the box" settings. I bought a few of my detectors from folks that had barely used them because they were to frustrated to use them. I hope you don't become one of those.

If you have more questions please let me know as I have 6 machines and they all excell at different things.

I'm also interested in metal detectors, but for farm use instead. I want to find bits of metal like chopped up fence wire, or parts that fell off whatever. What should I be looking for as I have no clue about them?

Almost any machine will find barbed wire etc. So dont knock yourself out buying an $$$ one. The Whites's Prizim Line or the Garrette ACE line shoud do fine. Tesoro makes a good analog unit that does not look to hard to use either. You might find a local dealar and test one out.

What are you looking for and where are you planning on looking?... if you are serious about finding stuff, buy a used high dollar detector. The one you posted above is junk... good detectors are expensive

Well, I'll give my .02 since you asked. I have a Garrett GTA model and I've been detecting for over 10 years. I bought it for hunting coins, jewelry and relics. I borrowed a detector from a dealer and tried out several models he had used prior to see what their strengths were. I settled on the Garrett due to it's ability for pinpointing objects at deeper depths and identifying the object. I've found everything from jewelry and coins on the beaches to play grounds all the way up to military coat buttons from the late 1800's and old bullets. I enjoy my detector even though I don't get out as often as I'd like. See if the dealer near you has a few you can take out and try. You can spend as little as 75 bux on a cheapy or a few thousand on really high end ones. Mine was about 400 bux new but I will say this, if you try the high end one you will not like the cheap ones at all. Try Cabella's for some mid line bounty hunters or Garrett.
