A friend is wondering about doing a turbo on his 1994 toyota sr5 pick up. Just wondering if that is a senseable modification. His goal is to pull a 2200lb trailer through the mountains on the high way !
He does have 290,000km on the motor.
I would appreciate some input and thoughts on this one as he would also !
If this is not advisable then what have others done about the issue of towing ?
Thnx

Get a different vehicle or get used to going slow. Turboing a motor with that high of mileage will cause all sorts of hell. You first have to address the issues of lowering compression in the motor in order to support even a 5lbs turbo setup. Next would be running an aftermarket ECU so you can tune it along with new fuel injectors with a higher cc. AFter all that you still have the problem of the 3.0 blowing head gaskets, so at a minimum you'd need head studs. Then you'd need to address the type of turbo you'd want or a complete kit (if those even exist for the 3.0). So to sum it all up, 1) rebuild the engine 2) get an aftermarket ECU for it 3) plan on spending a lot of time tuning it and learning how to tune 4) I hope he has deep pockets.
