I smell Mons Venus!
I'm getting a used 3.0 swapped into my 93 4x4 auto runner, and I'm using a motor from a 91 2WD 5speed. My guy's complaining that the wiring's significantly different between the two engines, and he's spent a lot of time switching items between the motors (which sounds like BS, and an attempt to renegotiate price after the fact).

Are there any differences between years of the 3vze?

each engine has a specific plug that goes to the ECU.
each transmission/4x4 2wd has a specific plug that goes to the ecu.

thing one: i would want to buy somthing that a guy may be lying about
thing two: i wouldnt want to buy somthing that a rookie has been tinkering and messing up
last thing: all other junk aside, this swap would be a PITA go restore to factory specs.

if i had lots of $$$$ and in your current situation heres what i would do

catapult the 3.0 into orbit.
install a G52 trans. with a T case.
aquire the 22RE, all the wires.
aquire the 2WD ECU.

hook up the engine to the ECU only.
forget about speed sensors, trans range sensors, ADD actuators.

cause to deal with it will suck! only if the ECU all had the same connections!

does wour truck have ADD?

Yes there are some differences..... I think between 92-93 they changed things... I know that the speedo went from cable to electric, and the timing belt tensioner changed somehow, so yes there are differences, and I would not be suprised if a lot of the plugs are different.....

Thats cause it is BS!!

I've personally swaped a V6 89 2wd into a 94 V6 4x4 4runner, BS!!

Tensoner, crank pully, pulling lower intake for knock senser, and oil cooler were my hardest things to deal with, oh and that was my 1st motor swap or anything mechanicly related, I am now qualified to work for NASA.

Priceless!!

Thanks all.

Motor and truck are both mine, so done deal there. It's still not yet completed, but trying this new approach...patience! For a few more days anyway.

The mechanic is very experienced, but more so with domestic/diesel, and is working out of a nice backyard shop. I just think he's hedging for more cash and looking to mitigate responsibility for promising me a 2-3 day turnaround. I'm glad I haven't been hanging by the sack for the extra 10 days!

Wristy, is that all I need to do a 22re/5sp swap?

If the Runner is using a new 3.0, shouldn't I be able to use all the computer stuff? Was that advice just for a 22re engine swap?

Speedo is in tranny not realy a eng problem, dont know Exact year but the two tension types I know of are spring and hydrolic, a (1) hole is not drilled and tapped into the head for them to interchange forgot exactly but this is easy to fix (I did it).

IIRC,

Pre hyd. heads (spring) do not have hole for the hinge bolt on hyd tensoner. Must use spring.

2MK, all sensors can be interchanged swap the sensors (ALL OF THEM) to the 4r's harness  REinstal and go.

AWWW, pleeaase tell me you put fresh HG's on the motor and that it's NOT in the truck. :frown: If I had a nickle for every time Ive heard the compleat story that begins just like yours.........................................

"Drove it for a month then a HG blew"................I'd have 40 4runners and $20

Forget 22RE thats another bunch of stories. Got a welder?

Dont let this stuff scare you done right the runner WILL return the investment.

I flog mine EVERYDAY and I put the motor in it.
