I have a chance to acquire an early '80s possibly late '70sToyota, 2wd though, that has been left sitting for at least 5 years. It has the 22re and a 5 speed. I was told that it was rated as a 1/2 ton truck when purchased new. I was thinking of making it a beater/farm truck running on propane so I wouldn't have to clean up all the old gas from the tank to the carb.

Anyone running propane on these engines? Any issues with it?

If it is a 22RE, just charge up the battery and try it. If you want, put some carb/injector cleaner in the gas. I let mine sit for three years before getting around to fixing the transmission. Once the battery was charged it started up after about 15 seconds cranking.

I believe it's a '78 model. That would make it a 22r? I may just try to get it running conventionally. I thought it'd be neat to have it on propane with gas prices constantly going up.

Drain the tank, put a few gallons of fresh in it, unhood the return line and pump the fuel that's in the lines into a bucket, hook it back up to the carb and drive it! Lets not go fixing problems that aren't confirmed... :D

He is right. I would follow this exact step. Besides I recently rebuilt a propane motor and holy ^&I( propane is hard on even normally hardened exhuast valve seats!!!!!!!! With this said I am a believer in propane after watching it operate at TTC this year but only on a severe 4x4 vehicle that reaps the benefits of off camber situations.
