Any M57 Swaps?

in Europe you can get an m57 powered bmw for about 3000-4000 Euro, you then have the gearbox, the computers, the aircon to swap on. I wonder how the h55f gearbox would behave with this engine.
And I think the engine doesn’t need to be tuned for “normal” purposes. The single turbo e60 generation bmws have around 200hp and 380Nm, that is plenty already.
I’ve owned such a vehicle back in the day, it was fun, especially for a wagon :))

I've seen motor mounts to mount an M57 into an 80 series, a trans to transfer case adapter to mount the ZF-6HP to the 80 series transfer case keeping all the drive shafts the stock length. I'd definitely do a stage 2 tune.

I’m starting on a m57 swap in my 62 series. Just got the engine pulled as of today and will begin pulling harnesses, engine, and transmission this weekend from my E70 donor.

I wasn’t trying to give you a hard time. I was thinking about the feasibility of an M 57 swap in a land rover discovery LR3, especially since they use ZF HP transmissions as do BMW, and so many other European auto manufacturers. I am probably not interested in that swap though. Too many complicated systems in the LR3.

The M57 is a great engine and good option for our cruisers . Several years ago I bought a LJ73 that was M57 swapped and holy cow did that thing move . Only issue was that the clutch was slipping when I bought it . I sold it to a friend that is a awesome mechanic and problem solver but after 3 different clutches in it so far he still hasn't found a clutch that holds up . Engine has been slightly tuned and has the R151 behind it .

I know a local guy who swapped his 5th gen Patrol with M57 turbodiesel, thing absolutely rips. There are couple guys in Romania who have put the M57 in 4th gen Patrol several times with great success.

On a YotaI haven't seen an M57 yet but the Mercedes engine from similar era the OM605 5cylinder turbodiesel I've seen swapped in LN106/LN65 Hilux.

EDIT: looking at the list of local competitors and there is an LJ70 with m57 swap but no idea about the drivetrain

They have all the adaptors for the Nissan already made, it’s a pretty straightforward swap. But I haven’t seen another write up of a swap other than a series of youtube videos of someone doing it in Australia, also from another x5. I am still thinking about this. I know it would become a very different machine.

Do you have a build thread going on this? Theres a 335d on copart nearby i am keeping my eye on. Have you picked a tuner yet?

Here are a few links for adapters as I find them:

Here's a whole kit including tune:

Ya these are non US engines as far as I know so I am certainly not well versed in them.

I think the reason people use them is cost. An FTE is not cheap to build or swap or even acquire used. It’s super good though, no doubt.

Cheers

1HD-FTE complete it seems is north of $10k w/ 400k KM, and thats before rebuilding anything, or adding a gearbox, etc.
Looking at 2UZ swaps, there are no really appealing manual transmissions available that will bolt up and work in an FJ40.
H55F requires sending bits to australia, H155 is really expensive, and, along with the R150, doesn't give me the first gear crawling capabilities I desire. They seem to be very long and if I want to run dual transfer cases, I need to run unobtamium ToyBox from MC (which is long discontinued), and I run out of driveshaft length in a J40 though the plan is to stretch 10".
The ZF8HP has some appeal, though, and there are conversion kits to adapt that to the UZ, M57, 1GR, and quite a few other motors....

Looking at the M57, I can get a bellhousing adapter to run a TR4050, and a ZF 8HP is pretty easy to do with that motor as well.
TR4050 gives a 6.16:1 first gear.
ZF 8HP has 5 or 5.5:1 first gear.
Pushing 300hp/500 ft*lbs is easy to do with some bolt on stuff.

I found an e70 X5 335d with the M57D30TÜ2 at auto auction for less than I can get a Sequoia 2UZ and ECU from a local wrecking yard, and I can drive it home. That same wrecking lot has an X7 ZF 8HP80 for $750.

The question I would have here is, which would be better to run behind this motor, a PT HF2A or a split case?

People have been running them with the H55. One guy made his own adapter. He's in Europe so I don't know if we can get one here. Maybe he would share the CAD model and somebody could get a few machined up.

Running what with the H55? The M57?
To be honest, the H55F doesn't give the low crawl ratio I'd really prefer to have.
1st gear is 4.843 giving crawl ratio of 52:1 unless you go with a 3:1 split case gear set, which gets you to 70:1. Deeper than that and the 5th gear gets negated by the underdriven high range gears.
The TR4050 and ZF 8HP actually have more of an appeal to me especially behind an M57.

The M57 swaps are certainly interesting, it seems quite a bit shorter in length vs other limited options in the US. Haven’t posted here in over a decade and couldn’t remember any of my info, so starting a new. Glad to see an active forum. Sold my 40 and looking at old wagons and of course, oil burners.

Doing some research for myself.
For an M57 setup for 300hp/550ft*lbs

What transfer case would you use?
The early 1 piece t-case would be right out, and since that is where the parking brake is for my project, I'd need to get a different rear axle (J6 or J7 full floater, potentially something else).

Will a factory split case hold up to 300hp/550ft*lbs or would it be better to go with a HF2A w/ part time conversion?
Considering that I'd need to get a different rear axle for a parking brake, would an Atlas2 be a better choice?
