I've been thinking about getting an FJ40 for a long time. I thought getting an FJ Cruiser would satisfy the itch, but I still have the urge to tear apart an old vehicle and restore it. I have a 15-year old son, and it would make a good project we could share time with.

I've restored a 65 mustang years ago and built a 427 Cobra kit car, so I have a little experience.

I was wondering if there is anyone in the Milwaukee/Madison area with an FJ that wouldn't mind getting together sometime. Any clubs or meetings? I'd like to talk about the FJ, restoring one, actually sit in one, maybe get a ride.

Thanks!
Jack

Jack,

I'm in the Beloit area, have a 1975 40, welcome to stop by. Call me at 6083622060 or email at jkjohn56@hughes.net

Even though Webelk sold his 40, he's a pretty good resource for restoring a 40. He's on here every so often so shoot him a PM. https://forum.ih8mud.com/members/webelk6.html

My 40 may* be stored in Elkhorn this year depending on a few things I have going. If I bring it up I'll let you sit in it and make engine sounds. I'm that nice of a guy.

Nice! Elkhorn is just down the road from me.

If you ever roll up to Appleton, you could sit in mine...would give you ideas on all the things NOT to do :)

Give me a yell some time. pm me. won't post the phone # like Kevin;). And if you plan on a "real" resto, plan on spending in excess of 15k.

Thanks guys.

I went and looked at an FJ for sale this past weekend. Made me want one more. Lots of things to do on it unfortunately. Tough decision. I'd like to just get it and dig in, but when you add up all the things it needs, I'm not sure it's a very good deal.

Giving it some more thought. Took the day off, might go take another look.

Where, how much$ does said fj40 cost (if you are not interested)?

You don't need it scott!!!!
kinda gettin the itch to do another one. I finally got the '74 honda st90 at the shop in preparation for a full frame off resto. Just have the itch for another 40/45 maybe a '71 hilux. not sure yet.

If you feel like satisfying the itch I'll drop my 40 off. It needs the old rattle can paint stripped off and a decent MAACO fleet type paint job.

Phil-
You serious? If you are, better start growing your fingernails to use for proper taping;).

I am still interested but the guy hasn't returned my phone calls or e-mail for over a week. I let you know if I decide not to get it and whether it's still available.

It's a basket case though. Missing rear tailgates, replaced with a board I'd guess because of rust. No spare wheel mount. Plywood on the rear tub, repair on the rear wheel wells inside, tons of bondo all over the rear quarters and the front fenders. And what was a good hood now has severely dented on both sides where the under support is separated from the top.

Perfect. Sounds like a good candidate for a 3/4 pilgrim tub. That would fix all of the cancer. When I resto'd my '75 I obtained oem fenders. Not too sure about the one you are looking at. Also sourced an oem hood. Sounds like a $500 truck to me. Just sayn'
Let me know. I still have some sources.

If it was $500, I would have snatched it up. He was asking $3500.

I'll have to search on "pilgrim tub" though. Would like to know what options are out there.

Unless it has about 20k miles on it. Yikes. Last I checked a pilgrim tub is about 4k. You can get all the lights from cdan oem. body parts like hoods and fenders, believe it or not check cruiserparts.net.
Got a lot of obscure parts from them. door parts and headliner parts $or. I have a plating company in Racine as well that plated all of my parts. Brake lines and such you can get in stainless/fuel lines etc. That is just the start of the 15k resto;) I paid $4k for mine with 56k original miles and it was a complete truck.
