Well I took the grille off the Ute yesterday and noticed a couple of extra holes below the headlamp openings. They appear to be original from the factory as they have screw retainers installed. I'm thinking they are to hold some kind of headlight protector. I'm not aware that Toyota produced a protector. Any clues as to what they are there for?

Not OE.

plastics threads may not be original but location of holes is spot on, as some of the grills in oz for the 70's did come out with little screw buttons exactly where your picture shows, and they were used to screw through a flat protector headlight lens and screw directly into the grill, the top of the protector lens would wrap over top of grill.
My grill is one of these version, but age has the got the better of it now, and the strength around these holes has dismissed considerably
