In trying to prevent my antenna from developing problems, what typically causes the power antenna's to fail? Mine appears to have a significant amount of dry grease and dirt on the mast once extended. I would imagine that it is making the motor/gears work harder. Any thoughts?

I spray mine about once every other month...more often in the winter...with a dry lube. Seems to keep it working just fine. Bending the antenna from trail branches is probably this biggest culprit to failure (assuming you keep it lubed )

I recommend replacing the mast before 100k miles. I started noticing that mine was in the state you describe as well as raked back a bit. At this stage it would have been a $40, 5 minute replacement job. I waited until the plastic drive "cord" broke off in the motor. I had to remove the motor to get it out - a fairly simple, but time consuming procedure that was totally avoidable.

Thanks for the info. Do you think cleaning it and getting it lubed would do the trick?
