will a rear 3rd work up front?

Only on solid axle trucks, The 86+ IFS rigs use a different front diff.

All rears 79-95, and fronts 79-85 are interchangeable (assuming the gear ratio's are the same).

And for the record, the only stupid questions are the ones that go to the tune of:
"How would you mount a spoiler on the back of a 1992?"
"anybody have tips on epoxying an aftermarket hood scoop onto my 87?"
"any ideal locations for mounting little dingle-balls on the inside trim of my cab?"
or anything to do with spring-over on a 2WD.

it is an 84, so if it is the third that is bad i can swap the one from the 84 rear i took out of it.
