My experience says otherwise. I *have* gone to Rocks under one of my rigs, but it's a bit...radical... When you get to the 40 inch range the drivetrain is reaching it's limits. But 35s? Naw, 36s and 38s are fine on a stock drivetrain. Me and the folks I wheel with run a lot of tires in this range and have for a long time.

Like I've said before. You can break ANYTHING if you try hard enough. ;)

Mark...

I kinda agree with Troll - I've heard of the 90's LC veterans talking about abusing clutches when running big tires before low gearing really picked up in popularity, but street driving is something else. I'm running a rebuilt 2F 0.20 over with a stock cam, Fuel Injection, DUI dizzy, header, SM420 with 2.31 t-case gears and 4.11's - which was fine with 37" MTR's (actually 80 mph wasn't unrealistic) - but when I switched to 38.5 TSL's my highway speed took a huuuge hit. No hills down here - but you need to be able to run 70 + down here to keep from being run over :D

Maybe I need to implement a few of your famous 2F performance mods :D .

Also - the height in some of those pictures is downright scary. I really liked the low profile I ran when SUA. I'm in the middle of my SOA with stock springs with the 46" Man-a-Fre add a leaves on order and my goal is going to be to stay as low as possible.

Just keep hacking off sheet metal :flipoff2:

heres mine ,body tub trimmed , stock springs , extra stock leaf added to all 4 packs , 38.5 swamps ,and a 3 inch body , i know everybody hates body lifts but it works for me , did not flip rear springs , just drilled a new hole in the spring perch and move axle back 1 1/2 inches , for the front ,shackle reversal , flipped springs , new hole drilled in perch to move axle back a inch or so to stop the tire from wacking my fender and stock length shackles

Hey do you have the stock bump stops ??????

Okay, maybe I misunderstood. When you talk about 35s being as big as you want to go with a stock drivetrain and running into "issues" if you do, I figure you are talking about overtaxing it. Snapping axle shafts and shattering Tcases. *Those* are "issues". ;)

It only makes sense that if you run 38 or 40 inch tires you are going to need appropriate gearing. That goes without saying. And being slugish with a stock engine and stock gears while driving on the street does as well.

Big tires require the right gears. That's not a matter of the stock drivetrain not being up to the job, and I wouldn't consider that an "issue". Just a logical and expected result of an improperly set up rig.

And drum brake birfields... Anyone who is running an SOA rig with 36+ inch tires and drum brakes on the front... What the heck are ya thinkin' man? ;)

the hardened steel sucks to cut down with a chop saw. Its the quickest way to break the shaft off so you can make a shifter nob out of it. :D
