They are. But no engine can survive the cooling system not being maintained and the engine being run without enough or any coolant circulating through it. The OP bought the truck *with* a significant coolant leak. Who knows how hot the engine got before OP bought it.

About a week ago I purchased a 2004 LX 470 with a significant radiator leak.
