Ok - Research in Motion is going under...eventually and the :princess: and I will be dumping our POS Blackberry's come September (end of current 2 year plan to get the upgrade/discount pricing).

We are with Verizon and their service in our area and anywhere we've gone has been excellent. This is not a debate on the pros/cons of the different service providers.

I've done a little basic research and asking coworkers what they like/don't like. I've never been real impressed with the iPhone, so we won't be considering those. Besides, the app market for Androids has caught up if not surpassed that of Apple anyway. Neither of us is or probably will be a heavy app user anyway.

I somewhat need a global ready phone for my travels to Chile and sounding like Costa Rica someday soon for work.

Samsung Galaxy looks nice, but I hear battery life to support that big nice screen sucks and you basically need to recharge every night. It's not global ready

Motorola's Razr's look good to and the Maxx is global ready. Other Razr models are not global ready.

What say the Socal80's collective wisdom from use/experience?

I have a Samsung Stratosphere and so does Yosh.. we love it. It's fast and where 4G is available, it's even faster. It has all the apps that an iphone does at half the price. I also picked this unit for its slide out keyboard because i can't stand using touch screens to type. This phone has been used and abused for about 4 months now and dropped twice (has protective case). So far so good.

As matter of fact, a friend just bought one because they saw mine and were ready to upgrade.

In the end, you really need to just head to the store and see what you like. All the smartphones out right now pretty much do all the same, it's just personal preference from there on out.

I recently did some research in this area, and decided that the Samsung galaxy s3 was the phone I wanted (haven't bought it yet). It has ice cream sandwich, a fast cpu (overseas versions get a dual core), 2gb ram, 4gLTE and a nice screen. I think it is global ready. Other comparable android phones had gingerbread and only 1gb ram. Battery life is above average even with the large and high res screen.

The razr maxx is basically the same as the razr with a larger battery. Supposedly one of the longest lasting battery lives of the android phones.

Haven't considered the iphone, but I believe the 4s is LTE. Isn't the iphone 5 coming soon?

next generation iphone is due out any month now - yes. Verizon has dropped the price on the 8gb iphone 4 to $50.

good to know about the larger battery on the maxx - confirms what I've heard about it too. worth the extra $$ over the regular model + global ready for me.

I have had the Razr Maxx since April and love it! It now has the Ice Cream Sandwich OS and is very fast with the dual core processor.

Battery life was a big concern since I sometimes work a 16 hour day on the road and forget to re-charge it. On average I get 3-4 days out of the battery charging it up Sunday afternoon and again on Wed or Thur.

The worst performance was on a recent trip to Chicago for an inventory system turnover when I drained the battery down to 20% during a long day in a 100 degree warehouse with heavy use on the phone. I was getting limited service in the warehouse so the phone kept searching for a wireless network. Once I turned off the wireless it was fine for the rest of the week.

Any smartphone used as intended will need to be recharged every night or two.streaming data sucks battery life. I am a huge droid fan. I got my wife an iPhone 4 and we ended up selling it on CL and buying her another droid. She hated the comparative lack of features on the iPhone.

Sent from my DROID BIONIC using IH8MUD

I hate to sound stupid, but what is Ice Cream Sandwich OS? Perhaps you can give me a tour of the Maxx this weekend. Certainly seems to be the phone...at least for me on battery life and global ready.

Ice Cream Sandwich is the latest and greatest Droid operating system. Don't know why they name them these goofy names the last one was named Gingerbread.

Would be happy to give you a tour of it this weekend.

New iPhone is rumored to be announced 9/12 with a release of 9/21. Be interesting to see what new trends they (may) set and features they (may) add.

Also, keep your eye on the current Apple lawsuit against Samsung. Closing arguments were yesterday. It's all about intellectual property re: phone OS and interfaces that apple claims to own. So if the lawsuit finds in favor of Apple, it may be interesting to see the ramifications on Samsung and all other Android phones (some on the street saying it would increase price of all android phones).

Brent, I have always found that sim chip based phones (GSM) are easier for traveling. You buy the chip in the airport when you land, plug it in your phone and you are good to go with your phone/setting/contacts/etc. Most of the rest of the world does not use CDMA (at least Europe, UK, Cabo, Costa Rica, etc.). Don't know about Aisa?

I currently have a Droid X which is getting a little dated, but I've had a few iphones and a few android phones. One thing that bugs me with the android phones is that they lock up about once per week.

Android phones seebe more buggy than the iphone.

Android phones also constantly update, and when you think your Android is working nice and good, it gets an update and gets all buggy again.

So outside of the automatic appeal by Samsung, what do you think the Apple win will do to the android market in general? Discuss.

I was quite impressed when I saw the Galaxy Note recently. Loved the handwriting (with stylus) recognition feature. Big screen.
