I had them both then had to do a factory reset so lost them...

I have a few boat oriented ones, currents and tides, but I'm too cheap to pay the ten bucks for the marine charts..:hillbilly:

tho ten bucks is ridiculously cheap as I remember the days of organizing 50 people to take charts to a copyhouse with a fullsize printer so we could all get charts for aus etc. for 3 bucks apiece instead of $40

so I was getting my geek on this morning and discovered another cool one, if you're into boats or ever on or near the water.

Called " marine traffic "

all the ships/boats with AIS turned on show up on a map, course, position, speed, sometimes a pic of the boat.

free of course.

(like I'd download it if it wasn't )

And a necrobump for some more geeking.

I got a knockoff android tablet a couple months ago , mostly for reading. Downloading ebooks by the dozen is waay better than going to the library. ( the hot librarian thing is a myth near as I can tell)

found a kickass app for boat people,

Marine Navigator reads rastor charts (.kap files) which is kindof awesome. Instant chartplotter, with 10" screen...not exactly waterproof, but nothing a good ziploc bag can't fix...:hillbilly:

Only real downside is it doesn't do " quilting" like the expensive plotters, but considering it's free, it's not much of a hardship.

The charts for the US are available free ( from noaa website) , canada charges for theirs:)rolleyes:),but I have pretty much all of them on a data stick, of course it would be completely illegal for me to share them with anyone who asked...:grinpimp:

For s***s and giggles I had another go with that androzic, but I'm buggered if I can find maps that work on it...I thought they were free, but the gubment website is confusing as hell. Maybe it's my hungover brain, and deep dislike of gubment websites.

What format were you trying to load into Androzic? I managed to get the Backroad Mapbooks to work just fine on Androzic.

I bought (yes, actually purchased:rolleyes:) the Mapbooks for my ruggedized tablet that sits in the truck, but as a side bonus I stuck the map files onto a micro SD card and put them in my phone... so I can use them even when I'm not in the truck.

I don't remember now what format I was trying, I tried a couple, and it just didn't seem to register their existance.

What format are the ones you're using ?

I found the website to be annoying as hell, which didn't help, but it's hard to dig up a straight answer on the "which maps to download" subject...

All this right after messing with the marine nav program which was so nice and clear about things . "Find .kap raster chart files. Put files into bsb file. Turn on program."
Had it working with all the charts in about 4 minutes...

It's just out of boredom I was messing with it, but it would be cool to get it going.

cool. I'll have another dig around for those.

It's been a while, but I THINK I had to convert them into that format using an OziExplorer utility. I think the format they came in from Backroad Mapbooks was slightly different. LMK if you're successful... I can always try to help more if you're not.

yeah, might be a bit before I make another attempt. I need to achieve a zen calmness before beginning to give myself a mood buffer...:p

If I start in my usual disgruntled state I'll be downright hostile after a few minutes of map websites and misdirection.

I don't have any versions of ozie explorer on my computers, so that's probably not helping.

I have a pretty new copy of the mapbook in a drawer, and a car that would likely implode within 5k on a dirt road, so this really isn't a massive priority, just me being stubborn that I haven't been able to get it to work.

the app is called navionics. I have had it for years and love it.It is as accurate as my multy thou.$ prog.

Yeah that's one of the $pay nav apps.

I was going to d/l it but it's something like $60 bucks for a tablet and they (navionics) wouldn't guarantee it would work on my device...

Does come with charts so that's a plus but I have nobeltec on a laptop(no gps tho) and therefore all the charts in .kap files so the free "marine navigator" works for me.

Used it a couple weeks ago when the boat I was delivering was missing a few charts on its nav software ... Not bad for a free app.

Navionics is likely better but they kinda pissed me off with the tone of their email.
So naturally , I'll bear a grudge for the next 40 years.
