Has to be simple! - Ha, that looks more like a Transformer than Simple....

No but nice, job and with as much thought as you put into it I am sure it will fit your needs perfectly!

Man, I can't wait to build mine! Mine too will be Transformer like in that I only want half a box but a full platform bed.... I have some ideas cooking up in my pea brain that I can't wait to work out in true form....

lol, it's a transformer allright! i've got extra carpet and might cut out the autobot logo out of it and stick it on the middle drawer just for sh*ts and giggles.

do it up! good luck with yours, it's a tonne of fun! my :princess: was like, "sheeesh, you and your box and forums, .... arggghhh!" :D :steer:

I made many a trips back and forth to Lowes standing around looking at hardware. The clerks have got to know my face and eventually stopped asking "can help you find something?".

Yours looks light compared to what it could be. I used a digital bathroom scale for weighing.

i hear ya. i still have to disassemble it all to vacuum all the wood bits and dust underneath and get ready for camping this weekend, so i'll try and weigh the pieces then..

Nice work! I really like the design.

Maybe I missed it in the description, but how is the assembly secured to the floor?

there's none, the idea was to have it removable but snug when assembled...security did cross my mind when building, but so far with sharp turns and hitting bumps, there's not much movement goin on. like i said earlier, hard wheeling will challenge the design and certainly a roll over will move things around. i really wanted to utilize the stock latches and have straps go around the whole thing but the frame sits on the latches... what i could do (and i already considerd this before, and might still do), is cut a notch just over the latches to make room for a D-ring or hook that'll hook on to a latch and i can tie the whole thing down even more..with regular driving, the weight of things is enough to hold it down. with the seats back up and everything tied down and latched, there's nowhere else for the box to move, except up in a roll over. i can still use a net (similar to the one in a differnet thread about a nylon back cage to keep stuff from jumpin out, i can use the same netting and cover the whole box down and use a latch, or drill new holes for a new latch location...if i had to.

nice work, another interesting variation. you can always remove the small boxes and lay down the middle seats for more leg room, a good cushion and you really wont feel the small difference in the platform

thanks.
yup! it would just slope up a little and i can flip around and put my head on that side instead...similar to what others have already done.

and thanks everyone!

update on the old thread, i just vacuumed the truck and remembered to weigh the pieces...total 90 lbs (w/o the 2 top fold down boxes, 70 lbs). still workin well (after a few camping trips and road trips). slept in it a few times and it's nice and cozy.
cheers.

Hey Romey, any chance you would be willing to post the measurements? I'm planning on "borrowing" your idea and modifying slightly for my needs. :hillbilly:

Thanks.

hOW BOUT A MINI PROPANE STOVE IN THERE, AND A SMALL SINK!!!

. . . hmm, stove eh? lil hamster up in my brain is runnin....got a cheapo butane stove that i could make a mount for that attaches( but removable) to the back somewhere...hmmm..

Well done.

yes! got it!! thanks to lx450landcruisers pictures (nice set up!), i thought about custom "modules" that fit in the 2 boxes. SSSooooo, we can make a "kitchen module" (stove/sink) that can slide into either long box instead of the white plastic drawers. i mentioned before that the rubbermaid bins with lids also fit, but just not two back to back (one white drawer and one rubbermaid bin fits perfectly tho). . . . so we can have a "bigger tool box" or "recovery/expedition gear" module which is a long box w/in the box that slides out. . . . all depending on needs. inside each module, well, the sky is the limit.

the peg board is smooth so the box inside the box can be lined with a thin carpet (just at the bottom) or something to make pulling out that much easier. i'll try and scribble some stuff up and take pictures and post...and then everyone else can throw in their own ideas too.

cheers!

This module thing is great and like youy said the sky is the limit. How about a Ninja attack survival module in which one would keep all battle/survival tools - for when the sh*t hits the fan!

hope the pic shows the measurements clearly...you get the idea i hope.

some comments:
- the side view of the fold down boxes shows a lip that is 32 cm high, this was due to a miscalculation in the overall height of that box when i didn't consider the slight thickness of the 2 pegboards (when folded down, it sat slanted so i made that little piece to make the platform level). so you can go taller, but the 38 cm wide top piece should get shorter. that angle allows you to have the box sit flush against the back of the seat.
- you can go wider on the top boxes (>50cm, OR one big piece/box alltogether, i made two so one can be folded down and still have a seat to use), just not any longer as it wont fold down, will hit the folded seats
- all pieces are 5/8"s plywood
- dotted lines are cut pieces
- then you can make your own centre drawer whichever way you like

white bins are from wallmart. Sterilite Ultra (49.8 x 41 x 24.1). but in the boxes, you can fit the blue rubbermaid bins with the lids that every store sells. you can fit one rubbermaid and one sterilite container together, but not 2 rubbermaids.
- i'm scribbling ideas for a stove/sink module that'll replace the containers on one of the boxes. if there's room, maybe space for cutlery/plates and stuff . . .

Thanks for posting the diagram. It'll be a huge help when I finally start on mine. I especially like the versatility built into the design, yet very simple as well.
