I have an extra set of oem aluminum mag wheels. Id like to powdercoat them, and that process is something I'm just learning about, but everything points to good surface prep leads to good results. As with anything new im a little unsure how to proceed. Some sources say chemical strip then fine sand blast, other say course blast to remove clear coat, fine blast to powder coat. My rims are in good shape except some spots the clear coat is chipped off. I have access to soada and media blasting and could get them lasered, but would rather avoid chemicals. On another note has anyone made a diy vibratory wheel tumbler?

I've done a few steel wheels, but not aluminum. The hardest part is the stripping and we usually send them out to have them blasted. Is the clear coat paint or powder? And are you doing another clear coat in powder or a solid color? If a clear coat, you don't want to blast as you'd want the polished wheel to show through.
