so my battery won't hold a charge. Brand new battery. I think the alternator isn't working. What would be the quickest replacement in the Pittsburg area? Any chance it can be rebuilt? Or has anyone replaced it with a newer more available one?

Thanks!

I haven't done this on my rig personally, but a buddy of mine with his a number of years back.
We took his old alternator to a auto junk yard and sized it up with something if similar casting size and layout.
Luckily the one we found was internally regulated so wiring was very simple.
I have no idea what the alternator we found was out of but he ran with it for years afterward and I think it only cost him $30.
Hope that helps....

What year is your truck? What engine do you have?

1971 it has the 2F engine.

Just tested the alternator and it's working fine. The battery was really bad. Swapped the battery and then also checked the spark plugs. They were burnt to a crisp.

Swapped them out and realized how rich the engine was running. It won't idle now. Blows black smoke (just a little) out exhaust. Checked the new spark plugs and they are pretty black.

So my new issue is the carb is running to rich. I killed the choke. Left it wide open. Still rich. Carb looks okay, no leaks, brand new gaskets. Float bowl looks good, jets look good, maybe my idle is set ridiculous high? I'm confounded. But I believe my real issue is I'm running to rich.

Thank you guys!

Bought a rebuilt one at Napa a couple of years ago for under 30 bucks, with guarantee. Save the pulley from your old one, as the new one will have a narrower pulley. I admit that I did run the narrow pulley for several months, using the stock belt with no issues at all.

Eek. Just saw the stuff about gas in the fuel. Yeah, chase that down (agree, it sounds like fuel pump) before doing anything else. Lack of lubrication will doom your engine quickly.
