Hi everybody!

I'm new here, but I've been following this forum for a couple of months. I'm from Spain, and I have a BJ40 - 1978 year - B engine - 24V battery. The cruiser was in bad shape when I bought it but I've restored most of it. Now I'm working in the wiring because it had been manipulated and must of the cables were bot correct. I've changed already all the lighting cables but I have some doubts regarding the Alternator-VR wiring.

I've taken some pics of my Alt-VR, could you tell me where do the wires go from each connector?
I've tried to follow each wire with the wiring diagram but I cannot understand very well where each wire is headed to, nor I don't know which letter (B, F,N,E) belongs to each connector.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hola Tocayo!

I only have a wiring diagram for a '81, but it might be the same.

The F (field) wire is white with green stripe. It is only hot (at the VR) when you turn the key on.
The B (battery) wire is a large diameter white wire with light blue stripe. It is always hot.
The E (earth) wire is white with black stripe and is always grounded.

The N (neutral) wire is a small diameter white with blue stripe.

Bueno suerte.

Hola Pin_Head,

Thanks for your prompt answer. Nevertheless, since the wires were manipulated before I bought the cruiser, most of the wires were not the original ones, thus, the Toyota colour code for the wires cannot be used here. Could you tell me where the letters go in both connectors Alt and VR?

By the way, the N (neutral) wire, where should it be connected to?

Thanks in advance!

Mine's 12 volt and yours is 24 volt. But despite this, I think our wiring here should be roughly the same Carlitos.

Your alternator looks original but your regulator doesn't.

I think you should have a 6-wire regulator fitted (not a 3-wire).

Anyway here is some pics of my setup:

Edit: Checking Toyota data suggests there was a change in January 1979 and that earlier versions used a different regulator (27700-56012) that I'm not familiar with.

After Jan 1979 it was 27700-56050 .... which I believe should be wired similar to mine. (Both these numbers are 24V.) So perhaps 27700-56012 was really 3-wire?????

Hi everybody!
Thanks for your help. I'm almost done with all the wiring, the only pending part is the Alt-VR wiring. I've thought about replacing the 3wire VR with a 6 wire one, but I'm not very sure if that can be done.

By the way, I'll upload some pics of the cruiser once I'm done with the wiring :)

Here's another good pic Carlitos (but it still shows a 6-wire VR):
