I have pulled a ND alternator out due to charge and brake light flashing.(Original I think at 194K.) Pulled the brushes out and found a 'slightly' grooved shaft...maybe 1/116" deep on one side of the brush contact area. How bad is this? Can/should it be repaired? I don't want to eat up a set of brushes if it's a straight up loser to use this alternator.

If it has any groove the it will prob need to be replaced. But if it takes more than just replacing brushes, I'd probably just go with a reman unit.

So This shaft is not worth replacing? I also was thinking about rebuilding to a higher output alternator. Can you specify a Nippondenso reman?

If you are into projects and you seem to be since you are wanting to upgrade you could always do the chevy alternator swap. I do not recommend the one wire set ups but I do the 2 or actually there is three but you loop one so you use two. I think I used my old smog bracket and made a tensioner arm and done deal (well maybe a few spacers but...)

if you do try this please google and read or PM me and I will gladly tell you about the resistor that you should use that is available for like a buck at radio shack. This will ensure your vehicle shuts off properly when you try to turn the key off.
