alternator bracket

So I got a new toyota alternator for my 71 FJ40. My old alternator had the eyehole on the left side. The new one has it to the right. My straight alternator bracket hits the alternator and prevents the bolt from threading through the bracket, off about 1/2 an inch maybe an inch. Has anyone dealt with this before? Will the later style curved alt bracket work or one from a car? Thought I would ask before kicking around the salvage yard for an hour Saturday? Thanks for all the help.

I delt with this exact same problem when I went to replace my alternater on my Fj40. I was on a trip down in Moab, UT and alternator stopped working in Price, UT the dude at Checker auto said my battery was bad after testing it so I bought a brand new battery and took off thinking "problem solved" barely made it to Moab with a dead battery it was still not getting a charge so had to replace the alternator. The aftermarket replacements that you find at most stores don't have the correct offset for the alternator bracket. Supposedly if you look around there is an offset one available but you can make the one you have work. Because this was the only one available to me, I booty fabbed the bracket to work with some washers for spacers and went off of a different bolt on the water pump that put the bracket at the right angle to hold the alternator tight. You might be able to find a curved bracket at the junkyard or something that's what I was planning on doing too but my handy work was holding up pretty good so I never did anything with it and haven't had any problems. Another option you have is to just rebuild your old one because it will fight right back in with the way your bracket is set up. Hope this makes sense and helps you out a little. Good luck

same thing happened to me on my 64 fj45LV when switching from a generator to alt. I used the off a 65 fj40 and it fit perfect and it worked fine but as I wanted it to look purdey I ordered a new OEM alt. well the 1st new OEM alt I got hit the stright bar and would not mount to the adjusting tab(same as your problem) I took it back and got a different one and it fit perfect..........cept I had to use the pulley off a different OEM alt(the old 65 alt actaully) becuase the pulley hit(like a c**t hair) the fan(plastic) but after swaping pulleys it worked perfect, this pulley/fan issue may or may not be a problem on yours

I have the part # for the alt I used at home if ya want it

heck I even got pics....

I think thats the alt you need, pissed me off the 1st one I treid was $40 this one was $90, both OEM remans.

Thanks for the replies. That is the alt I got pimp. Toyota reman. I need my belt tighter than what you have in the pic so maybe that is the real issue. If you where to try and move your alt to the very end of the bracket yours would hit and that is where I need mine to be. Guess I will have to go get a new belt, thinking I should change it anyways.
To change the belt do I need to do anything else, my alt is loose right now, remove the fan blade
Times like these I hate that I do not have a decent Toyota dealer. Probably going to have to cruise down to Autozone or Napa and get the most expensive belt, still not toyota quality though. Thanks for the tips.

Odd, I can move my alt all the way to the end and it doesn't hit. In the pic my belt was loose(r) then it is now.

belt will just go around the fan, undo belt and feed it thru.

alt part # was 27020 61012-84
belt was 90916 02006-77

What you're really talking about here is the difference between an F alternator and a 2F alternator. Many rebuilders don't know there's a difference because internally they are the same other than the diodes. Didn't think it would be a mystery to a Toyota dealer, but then again, I'm a hopeless optimist.

Once in a while I get guff from a customer because they call and order by the year, and then I send them the right one, which occasionally doesn't look like the wrong one somebody else put on their truck. (place frustrated smilie here)
