I think my alternator is dying on my 73 FJ40 with a 79 2F and saginaw ps. The current alternator is a Toyota 27020-61012-84 that appears to be from 76 model and is discontinued. It has been the same alternator since at least 2004 when I bought it. The regulator is crusted over so no model number on that but looks like I need 27700-60080. That’s also discontinued. Does anyone rebuild alternators anymore? Should I just swap it out with one from Cityracer? Looks like they have a replacement regulator also. Is there an easy upgrade that I should be doing?

You can test the charging easy enough. Load test the battery too at the same time. I think places like Autozone do it for free. Local places like Husky Auto Electric rebuild alternators and starters. Or with the manuals you could do it yourself, providing you can source the parts. I have had to drag a points file threw the contacts in the regulator on my 72.

The 27020-61012 can be rebuilt but the parts are very hard to source. I just rebuilt mine. If you want to sell me your 27020-61012 send me a PM.
