alternate fuse box locations

sup fellas,

i finally got paid (been over a month, thanks a lot payroll )
and so now i need to go thru a couple things on the cruiser to get it back to street legal.

#1 item: headlights. they don't work, pretty sure it's the dimmer switch, but i'm goin to go thru and redo the fusebox to get my feet wet in some wiring.


so here's my question:

anybody have an alternate location for a fusebox on a 40? i have a 72 and it's behind the door post just left of my left leg. (it definitely gets wet every once in a while, so tryin to remedy that)
i was thinkin that i might as well put it in a good place if i'm goin to mess with it.

possibilities: glovebox...and i'm tapped

The standard spot for a 71 and earlier is above the accellerator pedal on the firewall. You may find you even have the bolt holes for it, Jonathan.

seems like that spot that IDave is describing would be a good place. Glove box (i'm assuming) would be good too, i have my amp mounted in there and haven't had any problems yet, just a lack of space for my junk ;p

I rewired my cruiser about 4 months ago with a centech kit and I put my fuse box inside the glove box on the drivers side of the box and it really worked out well. I am installing another wiring kit this week and I plan to install the fuse box in the same place again.

I have a 69fj40 and mine is located above the accelerator pedal. I had to place small sections of copper wire at either end of each fuse because the contact between the fuse and the copper spring clip that holds it sucks. My headlights were always blinking on and off. Nowthey work fine. I tried soldering the spring clip to the little wire screw, but that wasn't the problem. I found that the contact between the fuse and clip just weren't tight enough. I tried squeezing them with pliers to make for a tighter fir and that didn't work either.

here's what I plan to do.

Leave fuse box located where it was factory installed.

I plan to take fuse panel off and go to Wal-Mart to find a small tupperware container with lid. I will mount the fuse panel against the firewall with the tupperware led sandwiched between. I'll connect all my wires and cut a small slits into the sides of the tupperware base and snap it on. Should provide the protection it needs.

Why is your fuse box getting wet? I'd leave it where it is and address that problem. My fuse box is in the same location and has not had a cover since the original dissappeared over a decade ago. I have yet to have a problem with it getting wet. Top off or on, with and without bikini.

my cruiser gets wet. period. everything in the cruiser gets wet eventually.

i have no garage, my hardtop is 3 hours away (i hate it anyways) and it rains twice a day.

i was thinkin bout the tupperware thing and keepin it in the same place (less wiring hassles), but i was just seein if anybody had some swell idea

and thanks for all the suggestions guys, i'll work my way thru them all

i put mine in the glove box (centech harness) and love it. clean and out of the way

on my father-in-laws suggestion and testing spots in the cruiser, I put the fusebox for my painless on the passenger side firewall in the engine bay. seems alright out there, not sure if its the best place, but the 80 and other newer cars have fuses in the engine compartment, so should be ok.

tupperware fuse box

Howdy neighbor! I've used a tupperware type box to hold my aux fuse block for
some time now. I mounted it on the firewall. Works great as far as access and
waterproofing. Hehe....I even put some press on labels on it to sort what fuse
works what. I used the labels to put " Land Cruiser" on the lid for a little more
"pro" look. I cut two slits for the wires to enter the box and then sealed the
slits with silicone. HTH
