I had sudden knocking sound-on another thread I noted the process thinking it was rod bearing.

Other broken glow plug threads either were small pieces that went out the exhaust or the carbon tip swelled and broke off in hole during removal-which the guys had a great fix for.

Mine is the whole 1” carbon rip broke off in cylinder-so, head pull and that’s a lot of work.

Bottom line; buy and use only high quality glow plugs (I thought I had) and suggest changing every 2-3 years if a daily driver.

I think ours was a mfg defect as it broke right where it goes into the housing-checked the other 5 and they are fine.

The cost and work are worth avoiding by changing glow plugs more often and as others have said; “only buy quality”.

Any chance to blow the tip out with compressed air, or just by turning the engine over?

Time for direct injection :)

Eurasiaoverland-I wish I could have blown it out as you suggest: the head has a pre combustion cup that has a small opening-so not enough room for the 1” piece to escape.

As you can see from the photos: 1-is the top of 4-piston, 2-shiny spots at top of photo are the glow plug pieces flattened into top of piston, 2-photo shows pieces are scrape tool removal.
No cylinder wall nor head damage.

Time for parts order, get everything cleaned up for assembly.

So-hopefully my experience, though very rare, can be of use/value for other MUD diesel’s to buy quart glow plugs, change periodically—though in my case I did that but had a bad one that failed-only 3,000 miles on it.

Welche Argumente sprechen gegen die Reinigung des Kolbens und dessen weitere Verwendung?

NGK with about 3,000 miles on the change: as shown in the photo-you can see it was a mfg defect as it broke of at the crimp-no swelling or degradation-I still stand by NGK quality as compared to many others—every company has a statistical failure rate and I’ve always preferred their spark plugs and GP due to over 35 years of success——-of course I’d rather not have experienced the statistics; on the positive side-dud find the cracked precups and some hairline cracks in head: so fixing those now rather than on a long road trip is much preferred.

Are you confident you have the correct voltage plugs installed?
 
Duncanrm-good question to ask-I hope others notice this detail you brought up.

Answer: yes, correct ones-I pulled all and they were in great shape with no swelling or charring.

It doesn’t show in the photo but when I examined the failed one at the break point it appeared to be related to the machine crimping at that location possibly causing a stress fracture —resulting in it falling off about 3,000 miles later….

Life’s 1% sometimes…had a few very rare events in my life over the decades….
