That picture is way too cool! If ya ever used one for trail or packing use please make sure to take those racks off. :)

Mark sorry that plan didn't go through on the lodge for you but I'm sure you will find something that will be even better!

Here's our BLUE MOOSE! Thanks to my partner Luis Caraballo who has worked on this monster since the invite was confirmed...

Next the ladder...I hope!

Thanks for that link Charla. I should have figured Archie was pulling one one me. ;) Seriously, I did think that something about that pic looked a bit off... lighting or proportions maybe. Actually looking again I can see that the boundary betwen the moose and the background should have screamed at me.... duh..

I still think that domesticating and breeding moose as working beasts would be a neat project for someone with animal skills and experience well beyond my own.

There was never really a plan for a lodge.... just a desire to have that property and a realization that something cool could be done with it. :) Blue Moose Overland has been a dream for years however.

Archie... Charla and a couple of others who bounce through IH8Mud have heard the story of "The" Blue Moose and my encounter. I'll have to share it again at the campfire this summer. :)

Actually, I'm the co-pilot on this trek. This is Luis's 40 which we will be taking. Four vehicles will meet in Manchester, Tennessee on June 11th for the load out on Roger Theurer's trailer. Roger and I will depart for Wasilla on June 13th. Roger has an International 4500 which will be the tow vehicle. We did the same in '08 but with three trucks on a shorter trailer. Todd Shirley was the co-pilot with Roger in '08. I am anxious to see Canada! Our group will gather in Wasilla, then drive to the trail head.

Mark, I'm looking forward to hearing about your "encounter". I'll make sure we don't moose it!

After you have herd the story, you will probably want to herbivore.

(What can I say... Puns aren't my thing.) :p

Mark...

I know that some of you guys who are coming up do not spend much time on the Net or even check email. So I am tossing this out here also to try and make sure everyone sees it.... check in on the FB group for the Trek when you get the chance. Nothing earthshaking, just looking to get a little input from people.

Snorkle installed!

We're in the home stretch now! Finally...the installation of the "trek snorkle". Luis always tops the expected and tweaks the concept until it meets his standard. A few minor details, and he will have accomplished a major make over.

Looking back...

One of the Cruiser Crew who can not make the Trek is looking at organizing a run over the 4th of July weekend (2-5) to come out and meet us at our last camp for a day or so. I do not know if he has had much response yet. The details of that are up int he air and will be up until tires hit dirt. We will co-ord on sat phone and 2m radio since we will not know where we will be exactly until we get there. :)

I will see how that project is coming for him, and maybe he will post up some contact info here.

The Trek itself will spend all it's time in the field. Some folks are heading south as soon as they reach the road system. Others are spending time in AK. There will not be any official gathering of the entire "cast and crew" other than the rally point on the 26th of June, either in Tok or at the trailhead.

There may be a partial gathering of some of the folks who are spending a bit more time here in the days right after the Trek, and there may be a couple of day trips up to visit Hatchers Pass or Palmer Creek.

Need Help in Whitehorse Yukon

I'm cross posting this from Chat in case someone might have a contact.

Hey guys, my son and friend are driving back to Alaska from college and had their alternator went out. There in a late 90's Ford F-150. Their with another truck and are swapping batteries to limp into Whitehorse. Does anyone know someone who might be able to help them swap out an alternator on a Ford TK?

Thank in advance,
akcruzers

Just an update because it's on my mind. There is still time for this situation to change, but so far break up and spring have been dry and hot. If this continues, the muddy boggy trails will be less so, the rain fed rivers will be lower, and the glacial fed rivers will be higher.

On the downside, this may impact our hopes of crossing the Gakona River to exit the area. On the upside it may increase our chances of making it down the Chistochina river trail instead.

Or it may start raining without letup a couple of weeks from now and flood us out of the are like it did in 2008. Doubtful on that score... but keep your fingers crossed. :)

Just saw Mark's post 553. I have not been monitoring the thread to close, since I started crying in my pillow cuz I couldn't go.

The basic idea is that Mark plans to be back on pavement the 5th and back in ANC that evening. So that means the night of the 4th (Sunday), they will be about a half day from the road. So that means we could drive in backwards from their take-out trailhead on the 3rd (Saturday) and meet up for a little 4th of July picnic.

I cannot get all the time off for the Trek, but I can get a 3-day weekend for the 4th of July. In fact I’ll bet half my office will be taking Friday off, and half will be talking Monday off, so I may even be able to sneak out Friday AND return with the Trek’ers on Monday.

So this is a call-out to the local folks that are in a similar time pinch this summer. If you do not have plans yet for the 4th, maybe we can still do a mini-trek. Mark has assembled a remarkable, experienced team to support the ACT 2010. If we get a group coming in the back-door, we will need to be realistic about whether we can run self supported.

aktundra I am interested. Have to check the dates. Get back with you. D'animal you are bringing up the ext cab 45?

I have no idea what is up with this, just got through the spam filter on my email.

If Treck'ers find themselves in Fairbanks on the 10th it may be interesting to visit one of the largest gold mines in Alaska and help out the local food bank.

Deadhorse after the Teck ?

I sent an email to the management of the Arctic Caribou Inn to see if Trek participants could get any special deal, should they decide to drive on up to Deadhorse. Other that the GM's assertion that this is a "significant reduction" I have no idea if this is a special deal. Usually when a hotel is near 100% occupancy the rates goes up, and it sounds like they may be getting close, but he will hold out 4 rooms @ this rate. The tour he mentions is through the Purdhoe Bay oil fields and to the Arctic Ocean. For security reasons private vehicles are not allowed to drive the final leg to the Arctic Ocean. I think they have a little certificate they give you as a member of the Polar Bear Club if you take a swim in the Arctic Ocean (I have a certificate I can give you for crossing the Arctic Circle).

I think Mark has set up a facebook page for Trek participants. Since there is a limited number of rooms available, I will post the reservation details there so Trek participants can get first crack

Email from ACI GM follows . . . . . .

Always great to hear from you Steve. The best we could do is 4 rooms for July on the 6th, 7th or 8th. The best rate which is a significant reduction off our normal rate would be $150 for the room which can sleep two adults per each room. We can offer complimentary dining and a tour provided we get the passport or drivers license information well in advance.

It is pretty important that we hear back by the end of next week as we are booking rooms for that period pretty quickly. CC's are fine for payment as we accept all forms of CC's

Have a great Memorial Day weekend.
