Yes you are correct. I was never able to quite drive to the cabins. I did hike the last bit with loads on my back. Back in those days, the Ski Commando's worked the mining claim to have access to the cabin. They and others keep the place in good repair. Never trash back then. Sorry to hear that others do not treat the place with respect as it should be.
The lane glacier is the closer one and then on the other side of the pass was the Snowbird glacier. There used to be Urt (can not remember the spelling) on some ground next to the Snowbird glacier.
Great to see pic's of one of my favorite places.

I should not say a lot. I just find ANY trash left at a place lke that bothersome. Could probably haul it all out in the back of a '40. Definitely in an M416. Mainly just bear cans and broken beer bottles and stuff tossed in the fire ring that did not burn and has piled up in layers. If you got up there and bagged and piled it all up, then went back after snowfall, you could sled it out easily with a couple/few guys.

Glad to hear that I had not misjudged the terrain. I would have been disappointed in myself if there had been vehicle travel up there in the last 20 years and I had not detected it. :)

Josh, not to sound snobbish, but the Facebook group is just for participants in this years Trek. So we can all share a bit more personal info and specific details about the Trek, coordinate convoy travel up the road, meet times and places, pre and post trek gatherings and stuff like that. We will be keeping this thread alive and there will be pic, info and discussion here too.

Mark...

No worries.. I understand. As much fun as you guys are goign to have, I think its going to be a little too Hard Core for my boys (4,6,8). We are probably going to wait a couple of years to take part. As such I think we will stick to fishing while we are up there next summer.

A pic of one of our camps from the 2003 Trek in this area

And a couple of an odd rock slide that left a wall across the pass until the creeks dammed up behind it eroded some of it away.

Brown, black, wolf, caribou and moose.

Two brown bears I ran into on the Russian river. The night before a bear bite a guy in a tent it just thought he was candy but he did not get hurt.

I have a 6.5 Turbo diesel that arrived yesterday, sitting on a pallet, transmission/ T-case on the floor, 60 body most of the way removed from the frame. I have to complete the body removal, do body work, clean up frame and put it all together and test it, hope 270 days is enough.

You have a lot of work ahead of you...

LOL

I know another person who has not decided what to build to take to ACT.

I'm feeling rushed and I just have to work the bugs out in the next 270 days.

...and putting a lid on your rig ! LOL. BTW, we are getting ready to make an x-cab hard top. If you need some thing let me know.

Lot's of little jobs to do.

First up this Sunday, the front diff/3rd is coming out and the 4.56 diff gears are been changed back to 4.11. Also the long side Birfield and axle will be replaced with the new Bobby long. Just need to order an Axle then and have it shipped to Dan's And I'll have a complete spare set of Bobby Long Axles and CV's 30 spline.

Front tail shaft will be re tubed it has a few dents from the last comp.

New leaf springs all round to suit the extra weight.

Rear bar work for fridge and fuel.

Re Paint the last 3 years of comp damage.

Snorkel shot blasted and powder coated.

Take off the time the truck will be in transit I have around 200 days :D

Are you really coming from Melbourne, Australia to Alaska and shipping your truck in?

Holy s***. That is completely epic if you are. Kudos to you brother.

FYI:
We will be having an unofficial ACTrekkers campfire meeting at this year's Surf N Turf.
Topics will include:
Preparing your rig,
preparing yourself,
uncertainties and expectations: friend or foe?

and the always interesting...
"who IS Whatley" and "what's up with RatPuke"

Expect to get the super secret/inside/offline/confidential info direct from the mouths past trekkers.

Of course, "kill you if I tell you" stories will be omitted for your living pleasure.

Carry on...
:grinpimp:

Ummm... If neither I or the Rat are there to answer the "Who is Whatley" and "What's up with Ratpuke" questions personally... then put little stock in what the chattering classes have to say. :p

There is so much more to these eternal questions of the universe than can really be answered by mere mortals anyway :)

To pre-empt Jim's insanity.... the answer is "solvent abuse."

Hmmmmm solvents... Is Chivas Gold a solvent?

;)

Mark...

BTW, Wasn't one of the Muses named Ratpuke?

Or maybe it was one of the Furies?

Maybe it was just one of the minor denizens of the Inferno.

Oh, wait... one of Loki's daughters. I think. Maybe.

Not sure I want to ask her. Proceed at your own risk Jim.:D

Mark...
