After a bit of searching and some head scratching, I think the PO of my FJ40 may have taken the bowl cover from the OEM Aisin carb and put it on the top of a Chinese clone. I am doing a tune up and after setting valve lash, setting timing, setting points gap, plug gaps and filters, I am not able to get a steady idle of 650 RPM. It bounces around 650-800 for a few minutes and then eventually drops to 350-400 and dies. I am going to tear the dirty carb apart and see what treasures I find inside...
I have a 6/1976 FJ40 and the bowl cover on my carburetor has a date code 6 F 8 and a metal tag with H3662.
The bowl cover appears to be older than the rest of the carb and it has the banjo fitting for the fuel return. The bowl does not have the Aisin logo near the sight glass. I believe the PO put the OEM carb bowl cover on the chinese carb so they would have the fuel return.
I am trying to find the correct rebuild kit for this carb. I have used Mikes Carburetor Parts for rebuild kits for years. They have have a kit (K4422) that supposedly covers 75-87 Aisin 2 barrel carbs. I have looked at Cruiser TEQ as well, but their kit does not appear to include the gaskets for the base (CARB61024).
Does anyone have any insight they could offer as far as which rebuild kit might cover my needs? I will eventually get an Aisin carb to restore and install, but for the moment I just want to get what I have working (if possible).
