Here's another situation I've been in. I purchased my current LX470 off Ebay.
Shipped on truck from California with California tags to North Carolina.
I took possession right off the delivery truck
and drove it to the DMV office with those California tags.
Is that some legal violation too?
Also when I got it registered, they did not require me to have a safety inspection.
I guess the DMV can get confused about what to do too :)

I bought my 100 from an owner living in Reno. I lived in Denver. We met in Salt Lake City. I called my insurance to get the 100 on my policy before I bought the car. I had the signed title and a Bill of Sale. I drove 8 hours with no tags.

Determining the laws crossing state lines is tricky. I picked the vehicle up in a state it wasn't registered in. I drove through a state (Wyoming) which wasn't my home, nor the sellers. The laws and tags issues were unclear and contradictory at times.

I think provided you have a signed title, bill of sale and valid insurance coverage you should be fine crossing the country, at least on the west portion. As you move further east they seem to have more and more regulatory laws around this stuff and I'd be less comfortable trusting an officer to be understanding.
