Replacing radiator, water pump, t-stat and engine bay coolant hoses this weekend. There is one hose that looks to be a real bugger (16261-66040, water by pass). It connects on the back side of the throttle body and runs down to just forward of the PHH and connects to the head.

If I replaced down the road when I already have the throttle body off, would I lose enough coolant that would warrant just draining the block?

Thanks

You can replace that hose alone with only a very small amount of coolant loss. I would wait until you have the throttle body off for some other project.

The bypass hose is a pain, I replaced mine when I had the top 1/2 of the intake manifold off for other work. I have a s/c so the throttle body is already out of the way. I just drained some coolant out of the radiator before replacing the hose and then topped it up.

cheers,
george.

Just replaced it today, its not that bad. Take the throttle body off, reach in from the side and yank the old hose off, you probably don't need to remove the clamp, it will come off with a good tug. Thread the new hose down between the runners from the top, reach through the side and plug it onto the nipple. Then, use whatever means necessary to get the clamp on. I got mine from the bottom with a pair of pliers. The whole job took about 10 minutes.

Yeah, it's very easy when you're doing the head job too!

I figured I'd do that one with my valve cover gasket. But honestly even at 200K all my heater based hoses at the top of the motor looked to be in great shape. Only the lower radiator hoses showed any real signs of age.

Mine were still fairly pliable even with 20 years on them. I'm paranoid though, I had what I thought was a perfectly good hose burst on me once and leave me temporarily stranded.
