Hey everyone,

I backed into my wife's car with my rear driver's side door open the other day (kids left it open and I didn't notice). I used a crowbar to bend the latching mechanism back, but the exterior metal is warped pretty bad. Has this happened to anyone else? Is the only fix a new door? Anyone know if I can just buy a junkyard door and swap it out?

After bending it back, everything functions somewhat properly now. The door is still out of whack and makes a metal on metal sound when I close it. I also get wind noise on the highway now.

To understand correctly, with the door open, did it hyper-extend, e.g.: open beyond parameters?

It looks like the metal is creased pretty bad, so I doubt the door is salvageable (as the whole structure is likely bent/warped). Probably easiest to get a new door. It's something a body should could do (but I bet it would cost over $2K as the'd need to buy a new door and paint it), or as you stated, you could find a junkyard door in the same color.

I'd at least get a quote from a body shop or two, and (if the quotes are high) see if you can find a good junkyard door.

Just let your insurance handle it. That's what it's there for... accidents.
So long as you haven't submitted any claims (recently), it shouldn't affect your insurance rate. If you're not sure, call your insurance and ask them a hypothetical question of "what if".

It'd probably cause rates to rise being an at-fault accident, and might be at/near the deductible. I had the same scenario with one of my past vehicles.

Depends if the point of the B-pillar where the door mounts is tweaked.

If its fine scour car-part.com or eBay and see if you cant find another same color door. I did that once with my FJ....just bolted new one on and transferred the door panel ect.

example: (edit: I think this one is actually scratched too bad, but...) Pardon Our Interruption... - https://ebay.us/m/AmBs9E

Another option might be to take it in to a PDR guy and see if he cant work some magic... They do get paid decently for their time these days. The guy I am using for a door ding has a $185 minimum for instance.

Thanks guys!

Yes, I basically hyper extended the door. The pillar looks like it's fine. I think the door too the brunt of it.
