I paid $3K for it. Seemed like a good deal at the time...... I figured I would find some stuff wrong that I would need to fix.

Derrick, you did well. I paid twice what you did, although my interior is almost mint due to PO installing SOR seat covers and heavy rubber diamond plate floor mats.. Upholstry and carpet look like they did when it came out of the factory. Mine has so little wrong that I want a project truck that needs more attention :)

Don't get all freaked out on mods--that will come soon enough. Take it camping, have fun, get used to it, and you'll be amazed what it can do. But her body's in great shape--learn from my experiences and don't go rack crawling until/unless you add body armor--skid plates for the sides and rear quarter protection. That's next on my list.

flowman,
thanks. I still think is was a good deal. The PO had pressure washed the underneath so it was hard to find the cracked case. Now I know why he was so willing to negotiate. We (wife, kids and I) are planning a week long trip in the Sierra first week in August, so I have a bit of time to pull out the t-case and replace or fix.

Bummer on the tcase. Its not too tough to find a used one. Are you interested in replacing it yourself? Get the Toyota factory service manual.
60wag,
thanks, I did locate a FSM. I don't know if I am ready to tackle the rebuild myself, but I will definetely pull it out and replace myself. not sure whether to find another one, or take this one in to MAF and have them rebuild it (providing I can find the front cover piece cheaply).

Doh! :o I still think you did OK on the cost, but I missed the bit about the cracked tcase. that sucks! In addition to MAF and Specter ($$$), I always check http://www.cruiserparts.net/parts/fj60.html, and they have an 87 tcase for $750. And don't let this get you down--you may have to spend more than you expected at first, but once you get it stabilized and take care of it it'll run forever!
