Looking for another device.

* I am all apple, but the iPad is too large. I want to be able to slip the device into fatigues/cargo packets.

* I will use it at work in downtimes, both where there is a wifi network, and also where there is not.

* Can I find a tablet that will allow tethering to the iPhone so I can utilize my 6GB/month data plan?

* I'd like the 7" size so I can carry it in the bush and utilize mapping software and google earth, or sat data.

* Most I quickly looked at today have sat maps, BUT you pooched if you go outside the wifi network and have not cached data down to the finest detail you wanted.

* Have any of you had luck caching sat data to a small SD card? Is there an app for this?

What would you guys look for within this criteria?

Thanks,

TY

PS: I'll ask about remote, networked, solar powered surveillance equipment in another thread otherwise ya'll think I'm running a grow-op. *L*

Any tablet with WiFi (and I think they all have it) will be able to tether to your iPhone once you setup the iPhone to allow it. Actually, any device with WiFi can be tethered, including laptops. The only hard part is either paying for the tethering package from your provider or jailbreaking your iPhone to allow tethering without it.

Ok, good. The iPhone has been jail-broke for years;)

Where I'll be there will be no cell coverage (in the bush), so the biggest hurdle will be 'caching' sat data for later access in those areas. If I could find an app to allow my caching of say 500 acres or so that would be perfect. Have Google Earth then look to a micro SD for that data and I would always be good to go. Question is does such an app exist for the androids.

I've got an app called "topographic maps Canada" on my iphone, which allows caching of topo maps so they are there when you don't have data (I don't have data on my iphone plan at all). I think I read you are in the US, but close to the border, might be worth a look to see if the maps extend to your area. It's a free app.

I'm a fellow Canuckastanian :D

Yea, I came across that last month. If there were something like that which could run on an Android platform it might be the ticket.
