Reffug, just because you wouldn't consider compromising your family's safety over money, doesn't mean you don't do it all the time. Did you know that among unintentional injuries, MOTOR VEHICLE occupant injury is the #1 cause, killing 15,000 children every year?

Please? You can't be serious :flipoff2:

Yes I think you have as I previously stated 'when I am not driving!' My wife has never powerslid a 7K truck or had to on a rainslicked road because ABS is in effect. I have and I'm quite confident in my own driving ability in such situations w or w/o ABS.

I guess what I'm saying is: absolutist statements and sloganeering aren't constructive additions to a discussion of possible mod's to our 80's.

If looked at how it was intended it was not an absolutist statement it was a qualified statement. If you want to bring something up and then not listen to others views on said topic because they differ from your own  then yes I guess your right they arn't constructive. Oh and LANDCRUISER CAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE SUCK! :flipoff2:

just a little sloganeering

And it is mildly offensive to me to get the implication that I'm somehow exceptionally endangering my family when I openly discuss the pro's and con's.

You said it, not me, that was not my intent or implication. I was openly stating my feeling on the topic in view of my family, not yours. I feel this is a topic we all must make our own decisions in regard to as they are our loved ones and for me its not worth it. :flipoff2:

I must say that I was intrigued by the idea of the freewheeling hubs, but the idea that the axle seals may be damaged if the thing moves lengthwise if kind of a serious downer....

E

I wonder if this is due to using the improper spacer thickness (0.27") when going to the lock out hubs? I can't remember if the sealing (shiny, smooth) part of the axle is the same thickness throughout. Can someone verify?

I have a spare axle but I'm not sure what you are wanting verified. There is a shoulder where the seal rides. On a new axle, this shoulder would be complete flat. There is some wear on these sealing areas. The shoulder is approx 1" long and, of course, the shoulder is concentric with the axle diameter (thickness?)

To experience driving without ABS just take a spin in a 91 or 92. you also get to have smaller rotors and rear drums. The 80 was sold all over the world without ABS after 92. I don't think it is dangerous or even risky in that mode.

No one is factoring in the savings in birfield, diff and even spider joint wear that Kenton is achieving. That has to be worth a nickle a day.

That said if I was a rational person looking to save money on fuel I would be driving an Echo hatchback around.
