I smell Mons Venus!
Hi,

How big of a job is swapping out the a/c units in these trucks? The '95 is the old body style, with the 22re motor, and the donor is an '88 4x4 parts truck I have. I realize I may need to get another compressor, but are there other parts that can't/shouldn't be reused. I imagine the dash is coming out either way...

I can't tell you for sure, but I'd bet that the heater box is different, where the evaporator coil is under the glove box. And perhaps the condensor coil mounts are different on the front core support. The dash switch is definitely different.

The '95 would have a system in it for R134A, whereas the '88 will be R12. I don't think you can mix parts between the systems because of this.

never done it myself.
i prefer the window method.

i know the HVAC units are different, as far as the fan mounts are concerned. specifically a 89 fan wont fit into a 86 unit, withoit relocation of the wire connector.

so based on this, i imagine it wasnt the only thing different.

also, the r-12 and r134a have different type of fittings where the line connects to the condensor.

what i suggest is, go to napa, and get your hands on a condensor for both years of trucks, and see if they are the same size. if they are, then you can buy the newer one and install it without having to change out the HVAC unit.

the r-134 molecules are smaller than the r-12's so somtimes when you retro fit it, they leak.

Damn, Wristy, a man for all seasons: giving a freaking physics lesson as well!

OT: Wristy, ever make it up to Ross Lake, a 20-mile man-made lake in the Cascades? Those floating cabins are awesome! That's about my favorite place in the States, and my family has instructions to release my ashes there (only after I'm finished using them, of course!) when the time comes.
