I got my motor out of my `85 tonight.Wheww! It`ll be a little easier next time I`m sure. Here`s whats` going on:I was planning on dropping in the 22r out of a`84 4-runner I have,"no Title".It has a recent rebuild on it and looks to be in pretty good shape.I was told it only needed a starter to run.I have noticed that the `84 has an o2 sensor on the exhaust manifold. The `85 didn`t have one.I couldn`t even find anything similar on the `85.What the heck do I do?Is there a way around this ?Am I missing something?I really want to use this motor as the one in the `85 was really treated rough by the previous owner.
I tore into the motor out of the `85 a little tonight. All the rods seemed to be good except for #3;that`s the one.It had a lot of play.I think the whole problem with this motor has to do with way too much fuel being dumped in.It had what looked to be too much oil in it;once I got a smell of it I realized it was a lot of fuel mixed in.I did notice that the emissions tube "the big metal one" that bolts to the top of the intake was clogged soleid as a rock with carbon.I tried poking it with a screwdriver and it didn`t do anything.Would this cause some fueling issues?
I know it`s a lot but I can`t do it without you guys.Thanks again.

Ok as for the O2 censor on the 85 it should be on the exaust pipe itself directly under the driver side seat you will need the exaust manifold from the 85 as well as the pipe with the o2 sensor mount.

Now about the intake manifold...
You should take it completly apart and put each part of the manifold in a parts cleaner and get out EVERYTHING!!! a cloged intake will give you a lot of problems with loss of power.

If you dont have access to a parts cleaner you can go to home depo and buy wd-40 by the gallon and soak them in a 5 gallon bucket or something then remove and clean with a wire brush.
Compressed air and carb cleaner will also help with final cleaning. but if you go the wd-40 route you need to let it sit in that stuff for a while to loosen up all the carbon.

Good luck man!

p.s.
Is the 85 a 22r or a 22re?

Never seen an 84 4r EFI, heard some one mention it,

Are you sure the 84 R's O2 sensor was pluged into sumpin? Could have been a replacement

Even if it was'nt when swaping parts think ahead look and evaluate the work ahead.

Make sure the 84 and 85's intake bolt pattern are the same.

Please be aware!!!!!!!! the 85, IF EFI has the TC every body's looking for it does not have to be "grinded" and is the prefered TC 4 marlin crawler and or becouse it has the shift linkage on top NOT rail shift like others.

Please be aware!!!!!!!! the 85, IF EFI is already wired for EFI either sell me the truck or you make it an offroad truck only.
Please do not hack the wires to put a small block in it, please.

REQUIRED READING::::L.C enginering, Downey, Toyota truck and LC owners bible, NorthWest off-road specialties, A.Adapters Buyers Guid (F*R*E*E*) ah.....Chilton's manual 2, 70-88 and 88-96? get'em......

We've all been there, where you are, and I am sure this stuff will help you and save you lots of time.

22r is carbed right?

So that being said, isn't the O2 sensor part of the fuel injection package and as such, wouldn't require it? I always thought that the O2 sensor was wired into the computer for helping with fuel ratio etc...
